My Top 30 Tracks of 2011

A little late, but here’s my top 30 tracks that got the most plays on my iPod in 2011.

1 / Ice Cream (feat. Matias Aguayo) - Battles

From the album ‘Gloss Drop’ this is the most joyous racket of 2011.

2 / Natch - Cornershop

From their great album riffing on Punjabi pop; ‘Cornershop And The Double-O Groove Of’.

3 / Bone Marrow - The Black Lips

The whole album ‘Arabia Mountain’ is chock full of equally great tunes.

4 / The Look - Metronomy

Love this spare, funky, echoing sound.

5 / The Words That Maketh Murder - PJ Harvey

Not just a great song, but a genius re-use of Eddie Cochran lyrics.

6 / Gabriel (feat. Valentina) - Joe Goddard

Loved Joe Goddard’s previous album ‘Harvest Festival’ and love this. Can’t wait for more.

7 / Separator - Radiohead

‘The King Of Limbs’ was a moody grower this year and this final track is sublime.

8 / Gratisfaction - The Strokes

From their much underrated fourth album; ‘Angles’. Much better than reviews would lead you to believe.

9 / Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People

Heard this first on NME’s ‘Radar’ album in Oct 2010. Inescapable on the radio in 2011.

10 / No Homo - The Lonely Island

The Lonely Island’s 2nd album ‘Turtleneck & Chain’ got a lot of play in the Wright household.

11 / The Ends [Album Version] - Basement Jaxx

Am biased, but Basement Jaxx & Steve Price’s score was my soundtrack of the year.

12 / What’s Happenin’ - Wu Tang & Jimi Hendrix

From Tom Curuana, the man who brought you ‘Wu Tang Vs The Beatles’, this amazing track.

13 / Super Bass - Nicki Minaj

Absolutely inescapable on US radio and ridiculously catchy. Will we ever find out more about ‘the guy with the thing on his eye’?

14 / Otis (feat. Otis Redding) - JAY Z & Kanye West

15 / Last Night At the Jetty - Panda Bear

16 / Cruel - St. Vincent

17 / Go Outside - Cults

18 / If You Wanna - The Vaccines

19 / Turn It Off - The Book Of Mormon

I saw this on Broadway with a raucous second night crowd and it was incredible.

20 / Take My Hand - Matt Berry

From Matt Berry’s trippy, folky and rather splendid album ‘Witchhazel’.

21 / Goodbye Bread - Ty Segall

22 / Make Some Noise - Beastie Boys

‘Hot Sauce Committee Part II’ has some great tunes on it. This is one.

23 / Blackout - Anna Calvi

24 / Two Against One (feat. Jack White) - Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi

Danger Mouse’s ‘Rome’ album conjured the spirit of ‘Mondo Morricone’. This is a stand out track.

25 / The Greeks - Is Tropical

This video with it’s faux gun play, psycho kids and anime blood was well up my alley.

26 / The Best Person I Know - Cat’s Eyes

Beautiful song, beautiful album.

27 / Video Games - Lana Del Rey

Another inescapable song on the radio, but with good reason, it’s truly haunting.

28 / 212 (feat. Lazy Jay) - Azealia Banks

Filthy. In a great way.

29 / Hawaiian Air - Friendly Fires

30 / Civilization - Justice

31 / Honorable Mention - Mike Relm - The Scott Pilgrim Remix

Again, I’m biased, but the full remix by Mike Relm was insanely good. Mixing the 8 bit ‘Sex Bob-Omb’ with Ludacris. A superb mash up.

Favorite Album Of The Year

So many great tracks on this album. A must buy.

‘Arabia Mountain’ By The Black Lips

Edgar, “the guy with the thing on his eye”, in Super Bass is Slick Rick!

I haven’t heard any of the songs except for the Radiohead one, kause they’re one of my favourite bands. And I’ve only “heard of” five of the others. Anyways, loved your selection of songs on Scott Pilgrim so I’ll give these a try. Btw, looking forward to your favourite films of last year. Or are you still playing catch up? hehe! happy new year!

  • Penguizmo

decided to play all 30 songs at once.
    not a good idea.

Will you post your list for top 11 (or however many) Films of 2011 as Tarantino did? Loved his list, Midnight in Paris all the way. Also strongly agreed with Meek’s Cutoff as one of the worst films, stupendously dull story. Very keen to know your picks though!

Tom Curuana put out a Bollywood/Okayplayed remix album out this year that had some amazing tracks on it as well. Also… you somehow overlooked the best track of the year. Powa by tUnE-YarDs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e31dpx-XGfI
I’m sure that was just an over-sight, right? Right, Edgar??!?!

I love the OkayPlayer album. And just getting into TuneYards too.

I ignored tUnE-YarDs forever because I didn’t like the way they spelled their name. For that… I am boob.

Dude, what happen with “steal yor heart away” by whitesnake, why are you mean with coverdale?
It’s not all related to his hair, you know?:/

A lot of great tracks on here! I really loved Tomboy, that was probably my most played album this year. Surfer’s Hymn is especially good for when you need to take a 4 minute break from the world and just relax. I just got into Girls’ ‘Father, Son, Holy Ghost’ and that has some great tracks. I would highly recommend a listen.

Thanks again for doing this, you always turn me on to really good music!

Wow, great songs! But I don’t see Gang Gang Dance… Try to listen something from their latest album, Eye Contact, from what I see you could like them a lot! Cheers!
