ROUND 2 | New Beverly Season: ‘Films Edgar Has Never Seen’

So, round two.

The last post had an overwhelming response with 1552 unique suggestions of different films to play in my ‘MOVIES EDGAR HAS NEVER SEEN’ season. Thank you so much.

So to help focus, I have included every film that was suggested by you guys more than once.

I won’t reveal which I have seen or which suggestions are from the following people I polled: Quentin Tarantino, Joe Dante, John Landis, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Guillermo Del Toro, Greg Mottola, Rian Johnson, Daniel Waters, Larry Karaszewski, Josh Olson, Jason Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Harry Knowles and others.

I’ve also thrown out a couple of ones I’ve obviously seen as they’ve been previously programmed by me at the New Beverly; BRAZIL, KISS KISS BANG BANG, WILD AT HEART etc. I’ve also bumped a couple of the more obvious choices like JAWS, BLADE RUNNER and DONNIE DARKO.

But here are the top ranks of yoursuggestions. And what a diverse list it is too. Probably the only film list to have GONE WITH THE WIND next to GOKE, BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL.

Kudos to the sole person who suggested SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Pretty sure I saw that.

So what do you rate? What do you want to see on the big screen with an audience? And more importantly, which ones have you not seen and always wanted to…

In the comments, try and limit your list to ten that you like or would like to see.

My final list may not be completely taken from this, but it could…

Alternatively, A COLT IS MY PASSPORT would make a rad double feature with SHARK SKIN MAN AND PEACH HIP GIRL as well, since theyre both different takes on the yakuza genre, and Id argue most people havent seen a straight yakuza film minus a Miike take on it like Gozu or Ichii.

  • Bob

“Hickey and Boggs”, which is insanely unavailable on DVD/BluRay and you must drag Walter Hill down to the cinema for a Q&A. Thanking you in advance.

  • http://twitter.com/mjgrainger Matthew Grainger

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is one of the strangest, most hallucinatory things I’ve ever seen on the big screen.

      I like this recommendation.

  • Swonderful64

You can’t go wrong with ALL ABOUT EVE — so many quotable lines and great performances. BALL OF FIRE is a great screwball comedy. Some really interesting foreign films on this list — THE GIRL ON THE BRIDGE and THE RED SQUIRREL are good, tho I stick to my original rec of original ABRE LOS OJOS (not abominable Tom Cruise remake). SOAPDISH is great fun. THIEF OF BAGHDAD (the Sabu version) and TWO FOR THE ROAD and JULES ET JIM are just the sort of films that get referenced all the time. REAL GENIUS is just sheer stupid fun. And BREAKING AWAY will put a smile on your face - love it!

PRINCESS MONONOKE was my favorite movie for about 13 years. (…and then you made Scott Pilgrim)
It’s the age old tale of man versus nature, but both sides seem to be especially desperate, and willing to commit terrible deeds to win.
    Things to notice:
-The soundtrack is deep and suspenseful, at times filled with dread or panic.
-the scenes of the village life are lovingly drawn. The scene of the women working in the forge, singing a slightly sad song still touches me today.
-the shots of the forest, even the background shots, are richly detailed.

  • Trevor Senhouse

Edgar, I implore you to watch Buckaroo Banzai, Noah Baumbach’s Kicking & Screaming, and Real Genius. You’ll love them all, especially the gag rate in Kicking & Screaming. Non-stop laughs!

    Movies I’ve seen:
    - The Awful Truth (Probably my favorite screwball comedy. As outrageous as the movie is, it has some surprising emotional depth.)
    - Modern Times (The Tramp went out with a bang in this hilarious satire. Would love to see it on the big screen with a large crowd.)
    - Nights of Cabiria (Giulietta Masina’s performance is astounding. Has one of most moving endings ever.)
    - Roman Holiday (My favorite Wyler movie. A charming and funny fairy tale that’s also surprisingly bittersweet.)
    - Scarecrow (I’ve only seen it once but was very taken by it. Hackman and Pacino make an odd and interesting buddy duo.)
    - Sherlock, Jr. (My favorite Keaton movie and probably my favorite silent film. In my opinion, it’s Keaton at his funniest and most imaginative. Great economic visual storytelling with stunts that are still mind blowing.)

    Movies I haven’t seen:
    - The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek
    - Park Row
    - Princess Mononoke
    - Red River

  • Andy

    films i havn’t seen:
    ZABRISKIE POINT
THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE
    CRAZED FRUIT
    THE BAD SLEEP WELL
    HUD

    have seen and love:
    TOKYO DRIFTER
    - my favorite Suzuki film, style to boot and a kickass theme song!

    PRINCESS MONONOKE
    - the animation would be gorgeous on the big screen!

    HOUR OF THE WOLF
    - one of my favorite films of all time, the only film to creep me out as much as The Shining

    COME AND SEE
    - another of my all time favorites, made me see life a different way, it would be a major bummer though in a group screening haha

BLACK BOOK (if it’s the Verhoeven film)
    - awesome spy film

  • http://twitter.com/PhilFromPHL Phil Nobile

Good luck finding a print, but Mikey and Nicky is a great one! You could pair it with Scarecrow as a double feature of underrated 70s buddy movies.

  • Adam

Just saw Silent Partner, thanks to the recommendations of Edgar and one of his readers. It was great — lots of cool touches with the characters, lead and supporting, and a cool, natural plot structure.

I also forgot to mention as a seldom-seen movie King of the Ants, a mostly hand-held one by Stuart Gordon. A cool B-thriller with some gross out moments.

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

      Written by Curtis Hanson.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=545504757 Marc Edward Heuck

It’s ineligible for this fest, since you saw it, but if you want to screen THE SILENT PARTNER in some capacity elsewhere, I have a print of that too you can borrow.

        • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

Love that film, but think it just played at the New Bev, no?

    • Adam

Yeah, I saw that. I wish I could see a copy of his script.-

BTW, I just noticed “Nothing Lasts Forever” is on your list, which I saw a bootleg version of… That’s a good one for Q&A — it’s a pastiche movie, but the 40s and 50s stuff works on an even level of the modern stuff, and the whole thing ends up really charming.

I haven’t seen most of the films of the list so I¡ll try to see some of them soon. From the ones I have seen I recommend films I have seen at the cinema with and enjoyed a lot.

    - SURVIVE STYLE 5 +
    - ICHI THE KILLER
    - PRINCESS MONONOKE

I think a double session with “Survive Style 5 +” and “Ichi the Killer” would be a blast. I watched “The Happiness of the Katakuris” with “Ichi the Killer” and it was amazing.

(For some reason formatting took all of my spaces out. Hope this is more legible.)Really hard to narrow it down to ten, but this is a mix of stuff I’ve never seen and keep meaning to (with Barfly and Superstar, which I’ve seen and love.)A Face In the Crowd

    Star 80

    Baby Doll

    Judex

A New Leaf (Keep trying to get a hold of this, and I hear the copy on VHS is different and not as good as the theatrical version, which is more reason to screen it.)

    Venus in Furs

    Stalker

    Barfly

Also Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story would be incredible if you can actually screen it.

Ditto on Accion Mutante, which I’ve been dying to see, as an Alex de la Iglesia fan.

Oh good! Some from my list made it onto yours. Hopefully they make the final list! I love all three of these films, I’d gladly watch them again and again!

    1. GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES
    2. SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE
    3. THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME

These weren’t on my list, but they’re great movies none-the-less:

    ICHI THE KILLER
NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND

I noticed you excluded Old Boy and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I assume that means you’ve seen them already. That being the case, you must complete the trilogy with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance!

I believe Chungking Express is one of QT’s many favourite films, so I’m surprised he hasn’t made you watch it! It is very good.

Hey Ed sorry i missed your first blog with all the suggestions.  Got to admit i haven’t seen most of the film on this list, but now i can update my Lovefilm list :)   You could probably have about 5 film festivals from this list, keep the theme going.  Ok here’s my picks there not in any order.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space -  such a fun movie to watch, make it the second movie of the night if you pick it.

Buckaroo Bonzai -  if i remember right one of Devin Faraci faves, i’ve got it on DVD from his recommendation.  It’s a blast.

Chungking Express - I would love to see a Wong Kar Wai movie on the big screen, this is one of my faves.

Harvey  - Edgar you have to see this film, James Stewart is amazing in it.  It’s one of my favourite movies.

Girl Who Leapt Through Time  -  i always enjoy watching this, it’s great.

Have fun picking the films :)

PS Please pick Harvey you will not be sorry. Ok i will shut up now ;)

Precisely the reason to hold a cinema hostage to watch them all in one sitting.

I have seen a lot of other movies too…

  • Ackronomicon

F For Fake will change your life.
    So will Killer Klowns.

  • http://twitter.com/bubblegenius Bubble Genius

Crikey. I’m afraid I’m going to mostly go with the classics here, like A Face in the Crowd, which would make a great double feature with Inherit the Wind, demonstrating that the more things change, the more they stay the same, given our current political and media climate. And again, another double feature, when John Heard was still the next big thing, Chilly Scenes of Winter & Cutter’s Way. You list Imitation of Life, but you don’t specify which version, it might be interesting to see both together, but most people go gaga over the second one because it’s directed by Douglas Sirk. The Lion in Winter is an incredible film, I can’t fault it in any way. Topkapi is wonderful and would double up well with another caper film, like 11 Harrowhouse. Some Came Running is a current favorite that I just throw on as background when I’m doing other stuff, Shirley Maclaine breaks my fucking heart in that, and the music is great. You’ve got a great list, and I could spend hours talking about a whole mess of these. The Best Years of Our Lives is the best war film ever (but very long, what war film isn’t though, eh?). Baby Doll would make a creepy double feature with Smooth Talk. And The Other & The Reincarnation of Peter Proud would be another great double feature, they’re equally 70s cheesy.

    • http://knifeinthehead.blogspot.com/ Ned Merrill

Yes, the Heard double feature is a must!  It’s a also a United Artists Classics double feature.  Both CUTTER’S WAY and CHILLY SCENES were originally released under different titles by UA and were then re-titled (and re-edited, in the case of CHILLY SCENES) and re-released by UA Classics.  Danny Peary wrote about both films and in their interesting release histories in CULT MOVIES 2 and CULT MOVIES 3.  CHILLY SCENES remains m.i.a. on DVD.

Five I’ve never seen and really want to:

Stalker, Nights of Cabiria, Beauty and the Beast (’46), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and 800 Bullets.  Special mention for Demon City Shinjuku, because even if it only partially lives up to that title, it’ll be great.

Five I’ve seen and am obsessed with:

A Town Called Panic, Songs From the Second Floor, The Bad Sleep Well, Kikujiro, and Another Woman.  Special mention for the first ten minutes of Suicide Club, which must be seen to be believed.

  • TkBall

    Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein
    Buckaroo Banzai
    Killer Klowns from Outer Space
    Modern Times
    Mr Vampire

These get my vote, they walk the line between insanity and genius. Well maybe not walk it, certainly straddle it on occasion, occasionally give it a chew.

    2046

I got to see this at the cinema after a mad dash from another screen where I’d just finished watching Hero. The disconnect between the different settings and styles of the films threw me for a while, but 2046 is a beautiful film that was totally epic on a big screen. Rewatching on dvd has never been quite the same and I think that any first viewing of this film needs to be done properly.

    A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS

I went to a lecture on Henry VIII in film and saw a tiny clip of this film and it was compelling. Still haven’t managed to get around to seeing the whole film and I really need to.

    GONE WITH THE WIND

The closest I’ve got to seeing this, is seeing the Gone With The Wind musical, which was surprisingly enjoyable. The one time it was shown at my local cinema, I was too ill to enjoy a 4 hour epic. The thing that always gets me about this film is that it was made before World War II. For some reason, it boggles me.

    ICHI THE KILLER

I keeps seeing the dvd of this whenever I go into hmv and I want to see it, but I’m too scared of the killing (this is why young kids shouldn’t watch graphic horror films with their mums, it burns you out for them later on). One day, Ichi, one day.

    THE LION IN WINTER

I am fascinated by this period in history and can’t believe I’ve not seen this one.

    POSSESSION

The only film called Possession that I’ve seen has Gwyneth Paltrow, Aaron Eckhart, Jeremy Northam and Jennifer Ehle. It’s enjoyable, but not what I would call must-see. :/

  • Dakota

Oh my gosh, to see the 5000 Fingers of Dr. T on the big screen would be awesome! My vote is for that!

  • http://twitter.com/paulmartinovic Paul Martinovic

    Wow.

All the films I’ve seen on this list (and there aren’t that many) are great, but if I had to narrow it down:

Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso - Both very different but totally magical. A Ghibli double bill would be great. Grave of the Fireflies also excellent, but I’m not sure how it would play at the New Beverly…

Female Convict Scorpion:  I recently was involved in sceening the Female Convict trilogy as an all-nighter at the Rio in London - these films are GREAT with a midnight audience. Check out the trailer I made for the trilogy here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qhKJ-eLgmQ

Chungking Express: Fantastically seductive film and probably my favourite Wong-Kar Wai (that I’ve seen)

Hoop Dreams: One of the best documentary’s ever made. The most engaging and enlightening 3.5 hours you will ever spend.

Throne of Blood: Best movie adaptation of Shakespeare, by a mile.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance: Love this film. Never found it depressing, either, although I could see why people would. Korean Noir FTW.

Treasure of the Sierra Madre: So influential, and still holds up really well today. Love this film.

And films that are on the list that I’ve been wanting to watch for a while:

THE CHINA SYNDROME, CUTTER’S WAY, ELITE SQUAD, THE
KREMLIN LETTER, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP, PERSONA, SON OF
FRANKENSTEIN, SUICIDE CLUB, STRAY DOG, TOKYO DRIFTER, ZABRISKIE POINT

Looking forward to researching all the others though. Great list!

  • SorinOtter

Make that: “Some I’ve never seen, some I’ve only seen on video, and some I’ve seen in a theater.”

  • http://twitter.com/si_kendrick simon kendrick

This is a great list and reading through all the suggestions made in your previous post was an education. The following ten are from the above list. I’ve not seen them before and I have been wanting to since I first discovered my love of cinema (hence the lack of some of the more obscure/cult titles) -

The Best Years Of Our Lives
    The Chimes At Midnight
    F For Fake
    The Informer
    The Tall T
    Mirage
    Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
    Morocco
To Be Or Not To Be
    Nightmare Alley

  • Anonymous

Aw boo. None of mine made the list. I guess that means I was the only one who suggested them. The price you pay for being an individual, eh?

Well, I think I can say that I have only seen TWO films out of that whole list! And I find it hard to imagine that you’ve not seen them.

The Court Jester? An absolute classic! The chalice from the palace has the brew that’s true!
    And Soapdish? Pure 80s Gold.

If you have genuinely not seen these then you must!

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

      Pure early 90′s gold?

      • Anonymous

        Quite right. My bad.
But the big hair, big earrings and big shoulder pads will deem it forever 80s-a-licious imho.

  • http://twitter.com/Metalligretch Gretchen von Tongeln

Great idea. Here’s my attempt at narrowing it down:

    Tapeheads
    The OtherThe Umbrellas of Cherbourg
    They Shoot Horses Don’t They
    The In-Laws
    Buckeroo Banzai
    F is For Fake
    Bob le Flambeur
    Persona
    Dogs in Space

(I probably picked the last one just because of the name.)

  • John

Edgar- you owe it to yourself to see The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. I envy you seeing it first on the big screen and would certainly attend any showing of it.

The logical pairing (based on names only) is The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. That film plays GREAT with a crowd (especially of they are virgins to the film). It also has a super experimental Jerry Goldsmith score you have to hear.

  • Ghostplanet

DANCING OUTLAW is something to see for sure (though as it was a PBS documentary, I’m not sure how ‘cinematic’ any print would be)
THE COURT JESTER is worth seeing for the troupe of midgets and a few songs/gags - but I don’t think it would be great 100 minutes for your screening crowd.
F IS FOR FAKE is a surprisingly enjoyable meta-commentary film that I think (from your films) you should DEFINITELY see.
LOST SKELETON is a more appealing concept than final film (which is just sort of “meh.”)
SOAPDISH(?!) is fun, albeit a bit dated. See it, I guess, but not a ‘crowd’ movie.
SUICIDE CLUB has some great ideas/moments, but doesn’t hang well together as a film (actually, kind of baffling). Frequently paired/compared to Battle Royale, but less genuinely provocative.

    — But most of these I haven’t seen (or better yet, haven’t HEARD OF), so I’d rather you pick those.  I live in LA and would love to see whatever comes of this.

Edgar, you have probably seen like 90% of these!  I think you should just show what you haven’t seen, it will be cooler for the audience that way.

There are a lot of good ones here though.   From the ones I’ve seen, these would seem to offer you good screenings and Q&A:

    Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein

    California Split

    F for Fake

To be Twenty  — how are you about dealing with walkouts?

But if you by some slim chance you haven’t seen one of the following, I think it would be criminal not to be blown away by them and then having the eyes of the audience bearing down you and demanding Q&A satisfaction:

    Los Olvidados

    Deep End
The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek or Unfaithfully Yours

A New Leaf or Mikey & Nickey
    Park Row

Gripes:  The Moderns as the Alan Rudolph film? — not Choose Me or Trouble In Mind?   And no Mr. Arkadin, which I think got mentioned twice?  I thought you’d love it — basically Harry Lime, from the Third Man, is the hero!

  • Michellewhite118

    Would love to see these!

    5000 FINGERS OF DR. T

    BOB LE FLAMBEUR

    BREAKIN’ 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO

Well, not in this season, as I have definitely seen this many a time. On the big screen too.

  • Vic Arpeggio

Cripes- - torn between the movies I like and know and ones I haven’t seen and would love to see at the New Beverly.

    Adventures Of Buckaroo Banzai
    The Gambler
    Get Crazy
    Hickey & Boggs
    The In-Laws
    The Professionals (SO bad-ass)
    Raise The Red Lantern
    Ride The High Country
Tapeheads / Urgh! A Music War would make a great double bill
    Underworld USA

(would love to see The Kremlin Letter too)

  • http://twitter.com/AlmostVictor Victor Escobar

These are the films from the list that I’ve seen and would suggest watching:
    Abott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
    The Bad News Bears
    Fade To Black
    Modern Times
    The Nutty Professor
    Rubber
Salo (although I do think this is one film that should be watched alone)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=545504757 Marc Edward Heuck

Well, before I list my choices, to help clearcut things, I should list the films that you CANNOT get, not even with the fine amount of influence you carry in the city:

ACCION MUTANTE (Lalo Schifrin’s publishers want ridiculous money to clear de la Iglesia’s use of the “MISSION IMPOSSIBLE” theme for the U.S., hence why it’s never had a stateside release)
CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (Beatrice Welles has quashed reissue efforts on this for decades)
FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY (Universal rarely made 35mm prints on their TV movies, let alone a long miniseries as this, so chances of any film material being available are slim)
THE LATHE OF HEAVEN (BBC trashed the film elements for the 1980 original, all versions are sourced from tape; the remake was never printed to 35mm)
SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY (Even with Todd Haynes’ popularity, Richard Carpenter and the record company refuse to grant permission for the songs used in his short)

So with those eliminations, here are my ten choices:

First off, a huge thanks to whoever seconded my suggestions of
    BUTCHER BAKER NIGHTMARE MAKER
    THAT SUMMER

So to those I would add
    800 BULLETS
    BOB LE FLAMBEUR
    DREAMLIFE OF ANGELS
    FEAR IS THE KEY
    IT’S A GIFT
    LIQUID SKY
    NOTHING LASTS FOREVER
    TIMES SQUARE

  • Kari

There are so many movies I love and would love to see again on that list, but I only included ones that I haven’t seen and am dying to:

    1. The Awful Truth
    2. Beauty and the Beast ’46
    3. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
    4. Shoot the Piano Player
    5. Sex and Lucia
    6. Jules And Jim
    7. Kicking and Screaming
    8. Kramer vs. Kramer
    9.  The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
    10. Modern Times

    *Not in any particular order.

Special category just for Buster Keaton! I’ve only seen Sherlock Jr of Buster Keaton’s films, and I fell in LOVE. I would looooove to see either/both Our Hospitality and Steamboat Bill Jr. on the big screen.

  • http://twitter.com/VulgarMoralism Kendra Fizzuoglio

Yeah, I’ll do my list in a bit, but I have to say I can’t believe you have “Terror of Tiny Town” on there. <3  I adore that film…I own that film and it will be on my list.  =)

Oh yeah, and kudos to all the flicks featuring Asano Tadanobu!

  • b1gfatho

Many movies I love, big Wong Kar Wai fan so naturally
    2046

THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

    THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG

  • Mr. Peel

This list not only reminded me of all the ones I could have mentioned originally but of all the ones I still have to see myself (Fear is the Key! I’ve wanted to see that for years!). Here are a few that I’ll go with but this list could easily be much, much longer. Also, I’m assuming that since Buckaroo Banzai was the partial inspiration for this series that it’s inclusion is automatic.

    Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
    California Split
    Diary of a Mad Housewife
    Don’t Make Waves
    Get Crazy
    Going In Style
    Lola
    Man’s Favorite Sport
    Nutty Professor ’63
    One Two Three
    Park Row
Quakser Fortune Has a Cousin in the Bronx
    Road House ’48
To Be Or Not To Be ’42
    Umbrellas of Cherbourg
    Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter

  • http://twitter.com/rorysteele Rory Steele

Some absolute classics of Asian cinema there, jealous of those seeing them for the first time. My favourites:

    CHUNGKING EXPRESS
THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME
    KIKUJIRO
    PORCO ROSSO
    PRINCESS MONONOKE
    SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE
    THRONE OF BLOOD
    TOKYO DRIFTER

Out of those, I think TOKYO DRIFTER would be the best choice - the rest are far more readily available or well-known, and it’s a sensational work. But beyond those, two absolute must-sees: POSSESSION, which is just insane and would get a really strong reaction from those more familiar with Jurassic Park Sam Neill. But also DEEP END, which I only watched recently and absolutely loved. Great performances, wonderful cast, amazing music, looks the business, really couldn’t recommend more highly.

  • JonKilloran

Is the SAHARA you listed the ’43 Bogart WWII movie?

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

      Yes.

  • Cara

As far as ones I’ve seen I’d make a real case for Trouble in Paradise (best pre-code comedy), Holiday (most underrated Grant-Hepburn movie), and Sherlock Jr (just best period). I’d love to see Breaking Away and after looking up Frankenstein: the True Story I think you’re going to have to show it. If only for the fact that Tom Baker plays a Sea Captain in it.

(Secondary thumbs up for Henry Fool, Opening Night, and Metropolitan.)

  • http://twitter.com/6_DegreesOrLess Todd Sutton

So difficult getting this list down to 10… Here goes:
    ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEINBEDLAM
    FAT CITY
    HE WHO GETS SLAPPED
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (’34)
    NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
    THE OLD DARK HOUSE
    SON OF FRANKENSTEIN
    THE THIEF OF BAGDAD
THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

  • Glenn Kenny

I’m still thinking GOKE. And BIGGER THAN LIFE. And ROCK HUNTER. And DEEP END. And IMITATION OF LIFE. And UMBRELLAS. And SHANGHAI GESTURE. That is all. I may fly out to L.A. to see some of them myself!

  • Anonymous

Please show the Quiet Man! I can’t afford Netflix, there are no more video stores, and I have to watch it for a class! Also, Sympathy for the Devil, is really really bad in my opinion. I love the Stones, but it’s really bad. Black Mama, White Mama is a great women behind bars flick with Pam Grier, and Urgh! A Music War has the Cramps in it so you know it’s good!

  • http://twitter.com/lomara Kimberly

This is a mix of stuff I’ve seen (not in a theatre), and stuff I’ve never seen.

I’m so excited Captain Blood survived your first cull!

    THE BAD NEWS BEARS (’76)
    BUCKEROO BANZAI:
    BLACK MAMA WHITE MAMA

    Two categories.

    1) Films that I have already seen, but would love to see again on the big-screen with an audience.

    BATTLE OF ALGIERS
    CAPTAIN BLOOD
    DEFENDING YOUR LIFE
REAL GENIUS2) Films I haven’t seen (I know, I know) that I would love to see on the big-screen with an audience.

    THE BLACK BOOK
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP
    NINOTCHKA
    RAISE THE RED LANTERN
    THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD
THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

5TAR 5YSTEM, RUBBER, PEPI, LUCI, BOM, SURVIVE STYLE 5+

  • http://www.facebook.com/stern.kyle Kyle Stern

The Brothers Bloom,  Beauty and the Beast, Battle of Algiers, The Big Gundown, Bob le Flambeur (I think I mentioned that this would be a great double bill with Hard Eight, glad to see that you haven’t seen it!),  Come and See, F for Fake, Ichi the Killer, Jules and Jim, Los Olivdados, Salo, Shoot the Piano Player, Sympathy for Mr, Vengeance, Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Still kind of shocked that you haven’t seen this; it’s perfect for the big screen. I hope you choose it), Unfaithfully Yours (My guess is that Quentin chose this one).

  • Larissa Alsis

I am always shocked when someone has seen Dogs in Space, let alone think to suggest it. I would travel from Boston to LA to see that on a big screen.

Other picks from this list: Night of the Creeps, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Ichi The Killer and Suicide Club

  • Chris

Treasure of the Sierra Madre is one of the best films ever made.  Bogie and both Hustons at the top of their game.  I’ve never seen it on the big screen - it would be one hell of an opportunity to get that chance.

Ones from the list I haven’t seen, and would love the chance to see for the first time on the big screen:
The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T
    The Awful Truth
    Bob Le Flambeur
    Buckaroo Banzai
    F is for Fake
    One, Two, Three
    Sherlock Jr.
    Throne of Blood
    Trouble in Paradise

And there are at least two dozen more.  Great, great list here.

    • Chris

Oh, man!  Didn’t notice Chimes at Midnight on there!  That automatically shoots to my #1 choice.

  • Huertoso

My suggestions:CHUNGKING EXPRESSCRIPPLED AVENGERSELITE SQUADHOW THE WEST WAS WONJULES AND JIMNAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF THE WINDONE, TWO, THREEPERSONASHERLOCK JRTOPSY TURVY

  • http://twitter.com/KateComer Kate Comer

I haven’t seen most of these. So you are not alone.

My top 3 choices are from my original list:
    1. Times Square - It’s no longer in print on DVD, I know this because I tried to buy it at Amoeba a couple of weeks ago, so seeing it on the big screen would be great, and maybe the only way to see it for a while.
    2. Defending Your Life - because it’s so fucking wonderful.
    3. Soapdish - Also insanely wonderful.
    4. Imitation of Life - I saw it as a kid, and don’t remember much except being very moved, and feeling that it’s an important film.
    5. Star 80 - I’ve seen parts of it and liked it, and would like to see the whole thing!
The rest I’ve never seen but have always wanted to:
    6. Real Genius - I’m obsessed with 80′s movies, and it’s embarrassing that I’ve never seen this.
    7. Superstar: The Karen Carpenter story
    8. All About Eve
    9. Gone With The Wind
    10. Krush Groove

haha, you think your formatting is bad! that’s what I deserve for cut’n'pastin’ straight from a MS product ;-p in my defence, this is the 1st blog comment I’ve been near for ages. gotten used to Twitter/Tweetdeck stripping formatting like a good basic txt editor *he says scrabbling to get hold of his geek-dignity*

  • Joe Loya

Gunga Din, Breaking Away (for you to see what popular American cinema looked like on the cusp of Reagan), Raise the Red Lantern, The Cowboys, Star 80 (to be reminded that Eric Roberts was once brilliant before his films went straight to DVD), and Seven (just to see your live reaction to it)

ALPHABETICAL MUST-SEES FROM THAT LIST THAT WOULD BE GREAT FOR AUDIENCES:

ALL ABOUT EVE, BAD NEWS BEARS, THE BANK DICK, CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, CHUNKING EXPRESS, DEFENDING YOUR LIFE, GYMKATA (GOOD AUDIENCE MOVIE), ICHI THE KILLER, JULES AND JIM, PERSONA, PORCO ROSSO, RAISE THE RED LANTERN, TALK TO HER, TOPSY TURVY

  • Christian Williams

The Brothers Bloom is a terrific movie 100% worth seeing.
Come and See is also a great film but emotionally draining.
And even though I’ve been on a Chaplin kick lately I still have yet to see Modern Times.
I love how this list makes me reflect on my own movie watching experience

  • http://twitter.com/nonotechnology Josh Kirchmer

Seeing Mikey and Nicky on the big screen would be a real treat. Faulk AND Cassavettes? Can you really turn that down?

Not sure what to pair it with..but reading the synposis of Almodovar’s Matador, it seems they’d pair nicely.

A doubleshot of Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke would be rad…

and for some reason Interstella 5555 and Candy just feels right to me. In a trippy way.

  • http://twitter.com/powerfuldog Nate Pester

    MIKEY AND NICKEY

    SCARECROW

    THE UNKNOWN

Though I’ve seen most of these (with the exception of THE CABIN IN THE SKY and THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN), seeing them on the big screen with an audience is very appealing for the rest. Also, people really, really need to rediscover THE OLD DARK HOUSE, so pretty please on that humble request.
