I love Scott Pilgrim and I love you Edgar Wright!

I want to be as great of a director as you are one day! I went to see Scott Pilgrim three times! First time was a drag because of my complaining friends/audience.. 2nd time was a little better with a quiet audience.. super silent… and the 3rd time, my mother was in love with it! I was so happy to see her enjoy it quite well!

This is the one movie that I’ve been anticipating since production (having extra’d in 3 scenes - Patel vs. Pilgrim, Todd vs. Pilgrim, and Gideon vs Pilgrim). After production wrapped, I moved overseas to teach English in South Korea. Months leading up to the premiere, I’ve been building hype amongst my elementary students saying that their teacher was in a big Universal feature. They were ecstatic to say the least.

I also made myself a promise that I would absolutely not download this film under any circumstances. I would watch it in theatres and then purchase it on DVD, this was my goal. My heart let out a huge sigh of pain when I found out that South Korea has yet to be issued a release date (I even travelled to Japan hoping it might be playing there).

This movie means so much to me. The summer I lived in Toronto was spent entirely with you, your cast and your crew. I felt the fatigue that you went through while shooting went into the early hours during the Patel fight. I shared the immense energy that radiated from the crowd at faux Lee’s Palace, and how you could have fooled anyone into thinking it was a live show. It was also special how we all celebrated Bill Pope’s birthday that night. And I still remember the feeling of insignificance when we entered the massive Pyramid club set-not to mention the feeling of wind whizzing passed my head from the stray boot of a Jackie Chan stunt member-I almost lost my head that day and it would have been worth it. To say the Pyramid set was epic would be the understatement of the year. I’ll leave it at that.

This experience blew my budding film-maker’s mind. It showed me the limitless possibilities of film. It also taught me that it is a gift to wake up early every morning and to come to set to be in the same room as Jean’s (chief of lighting) glorious bohemian silver fox locks (this was definitely an ongoing joke for the extras).

So Edgar, is any chance I may get to see my 15 seconds on the big screen? This may potentially be the only chance I’ll ever get at eating overly buttered popcorn in a room with sticky floors, while simultaneously staring at the back of my head on screen for 5 seconds. Sure, the moments will be brief, but would they be ever so sweet.

But all in all, thanks for a terrific summer. As of last month, critics have been praising the production successes of the film. This never really came as a surprise to me, as I already knew from first hand observation of your diligent work ethic, and your extreme attention to detail, that this film was destine to be something special. I can say without hesitation, last summer was the best and most thrilling summer of my young-adult life.

P.S. - The Pope/Wright - Army of Darkness/Team America double bill at Bloor Cinema was a glorious night (I sat at the front and asked a couple Q’s). I haven’t been able to watch TA the same way since.

I just watched Shaun of the Dead the other night, and I plan on seeing Scott Pilgrim again. Both where fantastic, and I really see what others mean when you don’t waste a word with screen writing.

I believe in the philosophy that it’s not hard to make good film, just very easy to make bad film. You clearly know what you’re doing, and I anticipate your future endeavors. I know if I get into film, your movies will serve as fantastic examples of how to do some things right.

I have one question, however. With Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim pretty much becoming cult hits, would you rather A)Continue to have a string of films that gather small but dedicated followings, or B) Have one or two films considered landmarks in film-making, ala Citizen Kane?
