The Devin’s Advocate

I feel compelled to not only wish Devin Faraci at CHUD.COM a belated happy birthday, but thank him profusely for mentioning Shaun Of The Dead in his top ten movies of all time.

The following quote is a very sweet thing to say. And I feel the same way about people’s responses to Raising Arizona, Evil Dead 2 and a few others. Basically, if you don’t like Bugsy Malone, I am not sure we could ever be friends.

I’ve found Shaun of the Dead helpful in life, as every person I have ever met who didn’t like the movie isn’t worth knowing. It’s an unbelievable litmus test and it’s never failed me.

Read the rest of his article and list (which includes my all time favs, Duck Soup, Annie Hall and the 1978 Dawn Of The Dead*) below.

Thanks Devin. Much appreciated. Great company to be in.

True story: My wife was having day surgery, and had to be put under. She was warned beforehand that sometimes people say or do funny things while waking up from the effects, and that it's perfectly normal. When her surgery was finished and she was coming out of the anesthesia, she demanded that everyone in the room name their favourite zombie movie. When one nurse said he didn't have one, she yelled at him, "Well of course you do, don't forget about Shaun of the Dead. What kind of horrible person doesn't like that movie?" He agreed with her, she replied "Well, there you go then. You have a favourite zombie movie." and immediately went back to sleep for two hours.
  • Edgar, thank you so much! And I thought you might get a kick out of what I have hanging in my living room these days, since I never would have seen PHANTOM without you. The PHANTOM poster was a birthday present to myself.

My litmus test film is Harold & Maude. I can't be friends with people who don't like it.

I actually don't know anyone who doesn't like it! Some don't like Hot Fuzz, but they're just idiots.

Yeah I know what you mean about 'Dawn', everbody likes Snyder's but I dig the old school Romero verson
  • We can still be friends if you don't like them, but if you love 'The Saddest Music in the World' and 'How to Steal a Million' as much as I do, I will adore you forever.

Actually I think that the original version of "Dawn" onl conserves his nostalgic value in comparation to Snyders remake.

there only been one dawn of the dead in my mind

Yay for Shaun of the Dead!

I have only seen Romero's Dawn of the Dead, so as far as I'm concerned it's the only version!

see, I don't think you do really have to specify which version, hun. If someone thought you meant the silly version, would you care what they thought of you? They'd be dullards.

The people who matter would know exactly what you mean......and might even wince at the qualification.

I live by this rule and if a person hasn't seen it I invite them over to my house and when the movies done I ask them "what you think?" and if there answer is anything other then "That was the best movie Iv ever seen" I tell them to get out!
