ROUND 3: New Beverly Season: ‘Films Edgar Has Never Seen’

Okay, this is where it gets tough. The lists I got from you guys on the site and independently from some fancy friends were amazing, but it’s a complete embarrassment of riches which I must put into double bills with your help!

So my brainwave was this. There are gaps in movie watching and I dearly want to fill them on the big silver screen and not sat at home with a DVD. So the New Beverly have kindly let me take over with a festival of the unseen (to me).

Below are the surviving movies in this knockout round. It’s enough to fill five seasons (and it still may). When I myself get through this list I am fully expecting to be bathed in the white light of complete cinematic fulfilment.

So I want you to make your dream double bills. I have four nights, which means 8 films to screen and I want you to theme these and pair them up. Note that ‘Buckeroo Banzai’ will be a stand alone midnight movie. Also be aware that ‘Gone With The Wind’ is four hours long and can’t be part of a double bill.

So thanks to all who suggested the films listed below. From Quentin Tarantino (who listed 10 movies currently on his mind) to Daniel Waters and Bill Hader (their lists stretched into the hundreds). Look below for picks from Landis, Del Toro, Dante, Apatow, Whedon, Mottola, Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Rian Johnson, Larry Karaszeski, Josh Olson, Harry Knowles and hundreds of you on this blog.

It’s quite the list. And since it’s in order of votes so far, it’s perhaps the only time you will find ‘Ichi The Killer’ and ‘Gone With The Wind’ placed next to each other.

Gone from the list? Everything that received no votes and also ‘Persona’, ‘Wild Strawberries’ and ‘Bigger Than Life’. Why? Because I couldn’t wait and I watched them already. And apologies to anyone not credited for their pick. Cross-referencing a 1000 replies and all these lists is a bitch.

Okay. Pair these movies up and program ‘Movies Edgar Hasn’t Seen’ for me.

The season with be December 9th to the 16th, so let’s get to it.

    ’70s Icons Against Type:
The King of Marvin Gardens / Scarecrow
+ Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino and Gene Hackman all subvert their popular personas in these low-key dramas that could only come out of the New Hollywood.

    Auteurs and Shakespeare:
Chimes at Midnight / Throne of Blood
+ Masters of Cinema Orson Welles and Akira Kurosawa deliver their own interpretations of Shakespeare’s works.

    Reflexive Cinema:
F for Fake / Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?
+ Both are playful deconstructions of media. With F for Fake, it’s art and cinema and with Rock Hunter, it’s television and advertising.

Hickey & Boggs and Mikey & Nicky
+ A night of buddy movies could never steer anyone wrong.

    Brits at War:
Gunga Din / The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
+ Gunga Din’s slam-bang adventure compliments the scope of Colonel Blimp’s epic romanticism. Quick side note, Anton Walbrook’s heartbreaking monologue toward the end of Colonel Blimp rivals any of his work in The Red Shoes and that’s saying something.

Hi edgar , big fan from 3rd world (Chile)  i think i´m idiot hardly knows a lot of the tittles but i´ll give it a shot:
princess mononoke  and nausicaa of the valley of the wind from the legendary miyasaki (i quite dont get it but makes you think and it´s high quality just by seeing the animation , shame on you!!!)

THE NUTTY PROFESSOR (’63) and Kikujiro ( what a journey for the boy of the movie) Objective: make them laugh and fill their souls with a chuckle.

awwww!! man it´s sucks(it suuucks!!!) not be there , if i´m ¿wright?you´ll be amazed by the animation of  gibli on the 80´s and i can´t be able to see your face T.T
PS: all the time watching tv and movies in english may finally paid off so, apollogize for any language error or misspelling.
PS to PS: really ? someone recommend you Shaun of the dead, i heard that the same guy did another call “hot fuzz” , Should we see that one , edgar? (:

  • Jetta Weinstein

    Ninotchka + Trouble in Paradise
    - Ernst Lubitsch was a master of romantic comedy and these are two of his finest; Ninotchka works particularly well when seen in a theater (it’s the kind of movie that’s really enjoyable when you’re with an audience)

The Thief of Bagdad + The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
    - two very different films by Michael Powell, both bursting with color and extraordinary visuals

The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek + One, Two, Three
    - wacky comedies with terrific, instantly quotable dialogue

Ball of Fire + The Lion in Winter
    - a weird and possibly wonderful pairing that showcases two of the best actresses of all time, Barbara Stanwyck and Katharine Hepburn (they’re my favorites, anyway)

  • Lydia

Battle of Algiers & Sympathy for the Devil would make for an interesting double feature.

    Rock on Edgar.

These are both OFF the list. As I have seen them. Both at the cinema too.

In fact BRAINDEAD I saw five times on its UK release in 1993.

Here’s my suggestion for the double bills (along with the names of it):

#1 – GOLDEN YEARS, DARK AGES

    and of course…

#4 – EPIC EPICNESSGONE WITH THE WIND (Suggested by Bill Hader)Have fun!

  • John Guertin

‘Cutter’s Way’ is a good suggestion, and considering what a big fan of Jeff Bridges you are I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. As for what you could pair it with I’m not sure. Perhaps ‘Mikey and Nicky’?

    Hi Edgar!

You’ve had plenty of people go through the whole rundown. I just have one movie that I would crawl through mud and barbed wire to see on the big screen: Throne of Blood. My breath catches.

Can’t wait! Love the lack of ego in this selection… Very refreshing. Come by Pause In Joy for some yoga if you’re in the New Bev ‘hood!

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

Well, you know there are many directors who won’t admit not having seen various classics. So I like to be honest.

I have many of these films on DVD, but just want to see them first time on a big screen.

  • Jeff!

An admission:  I stole my pairings from the commenters because some of them are too good not to duplicate.
Defending Your Life and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Might I add: Whoever paired these initially, you are a saint.  I may go out and do this one myself.)

    Nightmare Alley and Underworld USA

Mr. Vampire (I am stunned to see it advance this far) and The Nutty Professor

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and 800 Bullets

  • http://www.victormoreno.com victormoreno

I posted this on the Round 2 thread on accident, but alternatively I think A COLT IS MY PASSPORT and SHARK SKIN MAN and the PEACH HIP GIRL would be a fun double feature showing different takes on the yakuza genre – most people havent seen a straight crime/yakuza film without a Takashi Miike/Tak Sakaguchi flavor and SHARK SKIN MAN has a fun take on it that isnt ultraviolence based.

  • http://www.victormoreno.com victormoreno

SHARK SKIN MAN & PEACH HIP GIRL with ICHII THE KILLER – I think this would be a fun double for a few reasons. You havent seen Ichii the Killer and its arguably Miike’s best known film (outside of 13 Assasins now) and most people probably havent seen SHARK SKIN MAN and its undeniably a super cool visually stylistic movie. Both of them have Tadanobu Asano and this way the crowd for the show gets to see a movie theyre probably not aware of at all with an actor they love from Ichii and that most Americans only know from Mongol or Thor.

If you really wanted, you could do a triple bill of MONGOL/SHARK SKIN MAN and ICHII, but I think SHARK SKIN MAN and ICHII is the way to go.

also I would pair BUCKAROO BANZAI with SAHARA since they both have the comedy meets serials-style adventurer vibe to them and both are very underseen and underrated but BUCKAROO would anchor SAHARA.

  • http://twitter.com/lomara Kimberly

I’d love to see the silents at your NewBev screening.  The last silent film I saw was Phantom of the Opera (’29) at AMPAS with live musical accompaniment by the Alloy Orchestra. It was fantastic. It was the very first thing I saw there. I make it a point to see as many films as I can there, since each screening has been special in some way.

Wow! That’s an incredible list! I would suggest:

LOVE EXPOSURE (Sion Sono): Four hours of raw emotions. That movie changed my life!

M (Fritz Lang): The ending still haunts me.

THE BICYCLE THIEF (Vittorio de Sica): Powerful and gripping, from beginning to end.

THE GIVEN WORD (Anselmo Duarte): Religion truly is opium for the masses.

MEMORIES OF MURDER: An unforgettable psychological thriller.

There are so many more! But, your list is already pretty strong.

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

No more suggestion please. But from your list – I truly love ‘M’ and think ‘Memories Of Murder’ is the great cop movie most people have not seen.

(A minor digression about Court Jester, when I was moving into my frat house back in the day, I set up my VCR and tossed in The Court Jester to make sure I had the cables connected right.  My new roommate started giggling at the opening credits, so I went ahead and left it on while I finished unpacking.  The roommate stood there and watched the whole thing.  You could hear his second floor laughter even from the basement.)

    Defiantly need

ICHI THE KILLER and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance

    Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso

But you HAVE to see HARVEY..  My friend nagged me for three years about seeing it, and when I finally sat down to watch it, I saw what he was talking about.  It’s probably Jimmy Stewart’s greatest film.. more than his westerns, more than his works with Frank Capra.. Find someway to put it in the line up!

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

I have definite memories of HARVEY as a very young child, but I wouldn’t be able to say that I’ve seen it properly.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2KHNTSLF4SIUB4BXHTVWVZYFMQ Rico

Based on what I’ve seen of Mr. Wright’s sense of cinema I have to go with these double features- I also vote for The In-Laws (’79) which I can see anytime, anywhere:
Going in Style/The Professionals- each is completely different version of ‘The Big Score/We do one last job then retire’ movies;California Split/Let it Ride- the sickest movies about gambling logic ever made; The Black Rose/The Black Shield of Falworth- sweeping 1950′s adventure, terrible lead acting by beautiful people/great character acting by not so beautiful people and the worst accents ever recorded on film (ie- yonda is da castle of my faddah[Tony Curtis]);Days of Heaven/Mountains of the Moon- when you want to see a well acted movie that looks like a painting.

    • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

Let It Ride and Days Of Heaven are cast out – as I have seen them both.

It is the only time those two movies have been mentioned in the same breath.

    1:THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CARPENTER STORY (back stories of the rich and famous)

    2:BEAT THE DEVIL
THE LATE SHOW (the tongue in cheek neo noir, classic stars, great writing)

3: THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
THE CONFORMIST (two directors at their best, but slightly unknown; just plain cool, plus                                                                                                              Peter Lorre, you can’t go wrong)

    4: SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER
KWAIDAN (foreign films of the highest quality, maybe not thematicly paired but awesome nonetheless)

Again, who cares what you pick, I’ll be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfaithfully Yours and All About Eve
They would make a fantastic pairing. In All Above Eve, George Sanders is sublime, reminding me almost of an evil Stephen Fry. Unfaithfully Yours was apparently the wrong movie when it came out, as it is often cited as killing Preston Sturges career, which is all the more depressing since it’s my favorite of his (one of my favorites of any film!) Rex Harrison is his own straight man in one of the best extended slapstick sequences ever filmed. Plus Joss Whedon and Bill Hader recommended it, how can you go wrong?

ICHI THE KILLER / KIKUJIRO – such contrasting films from the same country

KRAMER VS KRAMER / CHUNGKING EXPRESS – different relationships, different time periods, both just as important films/just as historic

LOS OLVIDADOS / IVAN’S CHILDHOOD – the plight of a young boy

KICKING AND SCREAMING / PEPI, LUCI, BOM – pro: Elliott Gould, con: ‘general erection’ (or the other way around, depending on taste)
