It’s been a while since the last Pilgrim mashup. But then along comes this monster. Great editing by Hollywood Streams.

Yes, I am biased, but you owe it to your peepers to check out ‘The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn’ this weekend. It’s out all over Europe today. And guess what, the 3D is pretty amazing too.

Hope you enjoy yourselves globe trotting with Tintin, Snowy & Haddock.

The good fellows at the AV Club asked me to come up with 15 horror movies for a 24 hour marathon. I could have picked 115, but here’s my idea of a cinematic night/dawn/daymare. Do try this at home.

(And yes, regular readers may raise an eyebrow at the fact I’ve seen ‘The Manitou’ more than once, while never getting around to watching ‘Gone With The Wind’. It’s just the way I’m put together).

24 Hours Of Horror With Edgar Wright

By Keith Phipps October 25, 2011

It’s become a Halloween tradition around The A.V. Club to ask a horror-movie aficionado to program a 24-hour horror-film marathon that readers can re-create at home. This year, we turned to Edgar Wright, one of the minds behind the classic TV series Spaced (where he worked with co-creators Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson); director of Hot Fuzz!, the zombie comedy Shaun Of The Dead (both co-written with Pegg and co-starring Nick Frost), and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World; and most recently, the executive producer of Joe Cornish’s alien-assault movie Attack The Block. Anyone who’s seen Spaced, Shaun Of The Dead, or “Don’t,” Wright’s contribution to the trailers featured in Grindhouse, knows that he has a deep knowledge of and affection for horror, and the 15 films he selected—organized around Shakespeare’s seven ages of man—did not disappoint. As always, we encourage you to try this festival at home and post your experiences in the comments section.

Adam & Joe were/are great, but back in the dim and distant 20th Century there was Adam & Joe & Louis.

Behold a rare 1990 sighting of Buxton, Cornish and Theroux.

And Dee Lite.

Check out this video essay from the Matt Zoller Seitz’s Press Play site. It’s written & edited by Aaron Aradillas and Richard Seitz and looks at the classic car chases of the late 60′s, 70′s and 80′s.

This part covers three chases that are faves of mine, all from films produced by Philip D’Antoni; ‘BULLITT’ (1968), ‘THE FRENCH CONNECTION’ (1971) and ‘THE SEVEN UPS’ (1973). D’Antoni also directed the third of these and did an excellent job on the epic car chase that forms about 20 minutes of the movie.

If you don’t want these films completely spoiled for you, maybe don’t watch, but otherwise press play. Fans of screeching wheels and spinning hubcaps will enjoy.

On The Go Part 1 from Matt Zoller Seitz on Vimeo.

I’m looking forward to the next instalment and am going to wager the 1985 car chase will be Friedkin’s ‘To Live & Die In LA’.

Regular visitors to this site will know how much I love a good car chase, as I hope I made clear when I was a mere 19 years old and edited this on VHS. When I also did not own VHS of either ‘Bullitt’ or ‘Seven Ups’.

Not to mention making a whole video around the lead up to a car chase when I was 28 years old. This comes from 2002, with a pre ‘Mighty Boosh’ TV show Fielding & Barratt, a pre ‘Kill List’ Michael Smiley and a pre ‘Shaun’ Nick Frost.

A theme I may return to!

Okay, this is where it gets tough. The lists I got from you guys on the site and independently from some fancy friends were amazing, but it’s a complete embarrassment of riches which I must put into double bills with your help!

So my brainwave was this. There are gaps in movie watching and I dearly want to fill them on the big silver screen and not sat at home with a DVD. So the New Beverly have kindly let me take over with a festival of the unseen (to me).

Below are the surviving movies in this knockout round. It’s enough to fill five seasons (and it still may). When I myself get through this list I am fully expecting to be bathed in the white light of complete cinematic fulfilment.

So I want you to make your dream double bills. I have four nights, which means 8 films to screen and I want you to theme these and pair them up. Note that ‘Buckeroo Banzai’ will be a stand alone midnight movie. Also be aware that ‘Gone With The Wind’ is four hours long and can’t be part of a double bill.

So thanks to all who suggested the films listed below. From Quentin Tarantino (who listed 10 movies currently on his mind) to Daniel Waters and Bill Hader (their lists stretched into the hundreds). Look below for picks from Landis, Del Toro, Dante, Apatow, Whedon, Mottola, Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Rian Johnson, Larry Karaszeski, Josh Olson, Harry Knowles and hundreds of you on this blog.

It’s quite the list. And since it’s in order of votes so far, it’s perhaps the only time you will find ‘Ichi The Killer’ and ‘Gone With The Wind’ placed next to each other.

Gone from the list? Everything that received no votes and also ‘Persona’, ‘Wild Strawberries’ and ‘Bigger Than Life’. Why? Because I couldn’t wait and I watched them already. And apologies to anyone not credited for their pick. Cross-referencing a 1000 replies and all these lists is a bitch.

Okay. Pair these movies up and program ‘Movies Edgar Hasn’t Seen’ for me.

The season with be December 9th to the 16th, so let’s get to it.

So, round two.

The last post had an overwhelming response with 1552 unique suggestions of different films to play in my ‘MOVIES EDGAR HAS NEVER SEEN’ season. Thank you so much.

So to help focus, I have included every film that was suggested by you guys more than once.

I won’t reveal which I have seen or which suggestions are from the following people I polled: Quentin Tarantino, Joe Dante, John Landis, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Guillermo Del Toro, Greg Mottola, Rian Johnson, Daniel Waters, Larry Karaszewski, Josh Olson, Jason Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Harry Knowles and others.

I’ve also thrown out a couple of ones I’ve obviously seen as they’ve been previously programmed by me at the New Beverly; BRAZIL, KISS KISS BANG BANG, WILD AT HEART etc. I’ve also bumped a couple of the more obvious choices like JAWS, BLADE RUNNER and DONNIE DARKO.

But here are the top ranks of yoursuggestions. And what a diverse list it is too. Probably the only film list to have GONE WITH THE WIND next to GOKE, BODY SNATCHER FROM HELL.

Kudos to the sole person who suggested SHAUN OF THE DEAD. Pretty sure I saw that.

So what do you rate? What do you want to see on the big screen with an audience? And more importantly, which ones have you not seen and always wanted to…

In the comments, try and limit your list to ten that you like or would like to see.

My final list may not be completely taken from this, but it could…

I’ve noticed something whenever I program at the New Beverly. There is a real one upmanship among film fans about what movies you haven’t seen yet.

No surprise there, you might say, but I find it weird when people chastise a 20 year old for not seeing ‘The Godfather’ or ‘Citizen Kane’; it’s quite probable that they just haven’t had a good opportunity.

Especially on a big screen.

Also, I am a firm believer that it’s never too late to enjoy a movie – just because i saw ‘Duck Soup’ fifty years after it was made doesn’t mean I didn’t thoroughly enjoy it on my first watch.

I see filling in the gaps in my film knowledge as a lifetime pursuit. While writing a screenplay recently I went on a tear watching thirty or so film noirs that had escaped me so far and had a blast doing it.

When I think of some of the most famous or notable films I’ve never seen; they are usually big screen epics or movies that I want to be fully immersed in and not necessarily watch at home.

What’s the most famous film I’ve never seen? How about ‘Gone With The Wind’? I have no shame in admitting it either. It’s a film that I have frequently missed, with the thought in the back of my mind that one day I’d see it on the big screen and not on a television. That perfect opportunity has not yet arisen.

What’s a cult movie I’ve never seen? Well how about ‘Buckaroo Banzai: Across The 8th Dimension’. When a told a film geek that I hadn’t seen this, he replied “How is that possible?”. Well, simple. It didn’t get released theatrically in the UK and I grew up (cue violins) in a VHS less house for most of the 80′s. So I just missed my slot to see it at the time.

I am frequently told by people; “Forgive me, I only just saw Scott Pilgrim”. Guess what, I’m just happy that you’re watching it. Doesn’t matter when you see it, only that you are watching, whether it’s the weekend of release or 30 years later. (Okay, preferably the former.)

This January, when I programmed ‘Thunderbolt & Lightfoot’ at the New Beverly, I asked Patton Oswalt to introduce it with me. He agreed and it wasn’t until the night of the show, he told me he hadn’t seen the movie. Turns out it was crossed wires on my part as I had confused his love for ‘Charley Varrick’ with this film. Then I asked him why he was here. He replied, “I want to see the movie.”

Patton then proceeded to do a hilarious intro for a film he admitted never having seen.

So all this, got me thinking.

I am going to do a season at LA’s New Beverly Cinema called ‘MOVIES EDGAR HAS NEVER SEEN’.

The reason is twofold. Partly this is a way of showing film fans that it’s okay to have gaps in your knowledge, but moreover as a purely selfish chance for me to see them with an audience on the big screen for the first time. Could be fun right?

Some of these movies will be suggested by actors, writers, comedians and directors. And some of them could be your suggestions.

So my question to you; name me 10 or 20 films I absolutely must see. If there’s crossover with my own list of notable omissions, I will program it.

I hope you dig the concept, a complete subversion of screening one’s favourite movies and join me for the movies themselves around December the 9th to the 14th.

List your picks for must see movies and your own most notable omissions below!
