The Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World 1 Year Anniversary Music Video Remix Challenge! *Submissions Now Closed*

Over the last year I’ve been amazed at all the recuts, re-edits and mash-ups of my films. As someone who spent his teens re-editing movies on VHS, I am extremely heartened by your constant reinvention of scenes from the movies, be it a complex montage or a simple GIF.

So I hereby issue the would-be editors of the world a challenge.

To celebrate the one year anniversary of ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’s release OsyMyso has offered up an exclusive musical remix of the fight scenes and themes from the film. As you will hear, it is a glorious collision of Black Sheep, the Beasties, Rocky and many more. I want you to cut the accompanying music video to the track below.

So listen, download and break out your favourite edit suite…

Further rules? Not really. You can use visuals from the movie, the relevant music videos, wherever you want. Be as obvious or random as you like.

Then upload your video to your favourite video hosting site and link to it in the comments below.

The deadline for submissions is August 6th. *Submissions Now Closed*

On August 13th I will post my favourite of the bunch and there will be a mysterious prize for the victor.

Mysterious in that, I don’t know what it is yet.

So knock yourselves out. And even if you’re not an editor, you are going to want to put this on your iPod ASAP. Enjoy.

  • I didn’t want to cut it this close to the deadline.  But here is my entry for as long as YouTube will leave it up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SkH-LLziao  Hopefully the 1080 version will process soon.

    • Holy Crud man! that really is awesome, wasn’t expecting an entry like this :O

      • Yeah, that’s what I was hoping for. 🙂  Of course I’m worried that I didn’t do enough.  I’ve seen a lot of really good videos.

    • Great video! The effect kinda starts to get boring (it might just be me, or it might just be the fact I have heard the song way to many times now) at some parts but it is extremely creative. Keep up the great work though.

      • No, I agree. I’m my own worst critic, and towards the end it really drags.  But thanks for liking it!

    • María Salazar

      Love it!

Here is my entry for the contest.
Unfortunately the Dimensions weren’t perfect but it was the best I could do 🙂

    Enjoy 🙂

  • I regret to announce that I will no longer be submitting an entry for this contest, things have been very busy for me lately and I simply haven’t had the time to work on the edit. I do however look forward to seeing the rest of the entries in the coming days!

  • Finally done. Now I can see everyone elses!

  • Finally done and uploaded. Now I can watch all the other entries!

  • You know when you say the dead line is the 6th, does it only has to be given in on the 6th or does it need to be before, also by whose time is this going by? British? American?

  • Tanner

Hi, my name is Tanner (StellarMedium on youtube). I just finished a re edit of scott pilgrim and in my search to find places to share it to people who would appreciate it i found out that there was this competition going on. Unfortunately my montage doesn’t fit the criteria required for a chance to win the mysterious prize, but i thought i would share it on here anyways just for fun. I have watched a few videos in the comments and really enjoyed them!

p.s. i also found out after i finished that someone else did a scott pilgrim edit to the same song, so sorry to that person. luckily its a different fight scene.

    here it is = ]]

Drum Roll!! No luck with vimeo or youtube.. BUT Metacafe did work! (Please look past the annoying adverts, guys trying to sell you beer and annoying commercial you have to skip) and watch in HD. Metacafe is still pretty slow and a little grainy, but at least I managed to upload so bonus. I just let it load for a minute then replay and it seems ok…
(If you do like this Mr. Wright, I have a means to send the full file to play on a computer, would look much much nicer)I wanted to do something out of the box, as I figured everyone would be using a lot of the same clips.. and just overall, had fun. Its one of my favorite movies and I’m hoping the mystery surprise is a JOB! and that I win it!! HAHA good luck to all, grab some headphones (spent a lot of time having fun with the audio as well) and enjoy!! Can’t wait anymore, starting to see my ideas in things and I don’t want to be considered a copier. Not too mention, I just keep playing with it and I very well could be messing it up! http://www.metacafe.com/watch/6847700/scott_pilgrim_vs_notti_rox/

    • Bryan Cantwell

That is some serious layering (definitely a good call on the headphones), and the “I’ve got beef” is a showstopper!

I am sure, however, that *at least* 7 of us would line up to fight you for a job with Edgar… 😉

      • Christian Fanning

hahaha thanx bro I’m sure theres a lot more than 7 of ya.. but I definitely had some fun with this and wanted to do something kinda crazy n different. I wish I could spend more time but my social life has actually suffered since this competition began!! Good luck to all, and I really wish mine wasn’t on metacafe… but better than nothin’! Who Got Beef?? LOL

  • Deadline is rolling in hope everyone is almost done (unlike me) I still got a few gaps to fill in.

    • i’m only a quater of the way through D:

    • Awesome looking masking right there btw 😀 can’t wait to see this in action

      • Ya got a few of those in there and some transitions like the ones in the movie (when people walk by) sadly no whip pans at the moment. Big fan of edgar’s style so I am trying to incorporate it in to the video and some of my own videos lately.

        • Bryan Cantwell

It is tough to edit something that’s already be cut so tight, isn’t it?? That was most of the fun, for me…

          • I agree, I’ve never actually done anything like this before, I only ever really do films with my own footage and they have a heavy amount of effects and not much story so i tried to kinda get a story in this one 😀

          • Ya as a film maker this is something really different for me, I mean most of the footage doesn’t need to be color corrected and I feel limited with only  1 take of every action, but it didnt stop me from throwing in some of my own stuff. Most people were going with a story which I actually stayed away from for once. My goal is trying to work with the sound and letting my ears be my eyes. Well I should probably get back to rotoscoping….

          • Your video certainly sounds like one to look out for, I’ll definetly can’t wait to see this, it sounds pretty awesome.

          • Your video certainly sounds like one to look out for, I’ll definetly can’t wait to see this, it sounds pretty awesome.

        • ah I had some similar ideas too although i added a few video game related effects of my own, really love Edgars style too, it makes his films stand out 😀

  • Bryan Cantwell

Well, since Edgar did say there weren’t really any “rules” I’m going to go ahead and drop off my 2nd video entry… 🙂

Completely different this time. This time around it’s E4’s brilliant “Misfits” vs. Osymyso’s Fight Remix. If you’re not familiar with the the show, it’s a bit darker than Scott Pilgrim… Just putting that out there.

    • Christian Fanning

haha you have initiated a duel to the death!! I wil…. zzz boring! lol you are right tho, this is a ruleless competition, perhaps this might take the cake! it is pretty awesome btw =) and second entries, although devious, are permitted in the league of the one year remixers! En Garde! I have three days left… lets see if I cant think of a cool mash up.. hmmm

      • Bryan Cantwell

My methods, they *are* devious… 🙂

I have used material from the Scott Pilgrim vs the World Film, Scott Pilgrim vs The Animation, the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and the Scott Pilgrim vs the World video game, to edit a remix to the OsyMyso scott pigrim Mashup for the Edgar Write Remix challenge.

    Please take a look.

not using the actual song. But an interesting music videos of some awesome cosplayers. and a artist who a Scott Pilgrim character is based off of, who is playing himself. The one and only Micheal Comeau. And is that Bryan? yeah, it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG9HM0FJAMk

A question- do we have to own everything non- scott pilgrim that we put in the mash-up?  Or can we just use whatever we want?

Here’s my entry. I feel like I haven’t seen sunlight in a long while.

  • Almost done with the rough edit, then I just got to film some real life stuff and then its on to visual effects and color grading. Good thing we have two weeks left.

  • Jason Lu

Just out of randomness, what video editor did people use? I used Vegas Pro.

    • Edgar Cameron

I used Final Cut Pro X.

    • Bryan Cantwell

I cut mine of Vegas Pro, too.

      • Bryan Cantwell

        *on. ack.

        • Ewwww, that software’s horrible, I used Final Cut Pro 7

          • Bryan Cantwell

You really think that? Have you actually given it a fair chance? I use both, FCP at work and Vegas for personal stuff… They both have advantages & disadvantages, like anything else. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s “horrible.”

          • Bryan Cantwell

          • Right, I hope you legitimately had a problem with Vegas from past experiences, otherwise there’s absolutely no reason to trash on it. They’re all just tools for doing the same thing.

    • Bryan Cantwell

I cut mine of Vegas Pro, too.

  • Christian Fanning

I wonder how many people are doing the same.. and waiting until the very end to drop their entry? haha hmmmmm

    • A lot of people. 😀 I was tempted too but I just didn’t want to use tactics to win. :p (My video is below already. :D)

      • Christian Fanning

im kinda bummed actually.. ive been working on this for a while now.. and i just had a feeling (due to past nonsense with youtube and uploading film content because i like to remix things) that youtube was going to be a jerk about this.. so i rendered what i’ve done, which is a bit so far, uploaded..and of course…. blocked worldwide because it contains NBC Universal’s Content.. bah! so its option time now i think.. my files are normally quite large even for mpeg-4s… but what is the upload limit for vimeo anyone know? youtube is nice because its 2 gigs.. and converts it simply to a good ratio for streaming.. grr lol

      • Christian Fanning

        • Bryan Cantwell

The free Vimeo account allows 500MB per week upload, the pay account gives you 5GB per week.  You could always compress your finished video with something like MPEG Streamclip, it does a pretty clean h.264 compression.

          • Christian Fanning

Thx Bryan & Edgar! I was looking at vimeo yesterday.. I really don’t like compressing things that are like almost 2 gigs down to 500 megs but looks like its gonna have to happen. just never looks quite as clean. I’ll try metacafe for sure though first, thank you very much, never thought of that! =) .n ur right, h.264 doesn’t look too bad and i do have streamclip if need be. bummer about youtube tho. i’m curious why others have been able to upload? maybe they’re not using HD or somethin??? weird

          • Christian Fanning

Oh wow! LOL youtube loves me.. they’re threatening to disable my account if I try and upload any more registered content…. why does nobody else have these problems?? lol frigg.. metacafe or vimeo it is..

You could also try metacafe.com. It’s also 2GB and stuff usually doesn’t get blocked.

Where can I get footage of the whole Scott Pilgrim film?

  • Guest

Which dvd ripping software should I use for the dvd?
    P.S. I have a Mac.

    • Edgar Cameron

I would recommend using Handbrake. That’s what I use and it works very well

      • Rainer’s

        Awesome. Thanks.
Is Adobe Premiere Pro a good video editor compared to Final Cut Pro?

        • Edgar Cameron

I personally like Final Cut Pro better (whether it be Final Cut Pro 7 or Final Cut Pro X) but I haven’t had much experience with Adobe Premiere Pro.

        • Bryan Cantwell

They’re both fine, just depends on which one you have/like, and how much money you want to spend!

        • Bryan Cantwell

They’re both fine, just depends on which one you have/like, and how much money you want to spend!

  • ahh o-o running into so many problems …. i had these great ideas, but its one problem after another. I couldnt download the song, finally i turned the youtube video into an MP3, then my computer kept crashing, then the pictures wouldnt work and i dont have videos so i downloaded some but i cant pay for quicktime because my parents dont want me to. i cant get the videos without quicktime so basically i’m screwed …. I don’t even want to win as much as know that edgar wright, the best director ever for making this movie, has seen it…but he wont…and i just spent 3 hours making a video from pictures alone, then noticed it didnt look right, and tried to save it anyways but somehow it got deleted..’
i’m sorry for this annoying rant -.-‘
but i’ve wanted this chance for so long .

    • if you have the dvd you can rip the footage from there using some software called handbrake thats what i did.

  • 0-0 I want to do this so bad, Scott Pilgrim has been my life for a year.
But I cant download the 1st link because there are too many downloads and for some reason I can’t download the second one… I have to do this though :/
    somebody help?
i’m using jaycut if that helps …

    • Bryan Cantwell

On the off chance that you’re on  a PC, google “Lightworks beta.” Free pro editing suite, “The King’s Speech” was cut on it, so it does rate well… 🙂  As for getting the video, maybe a rental, and handbrake?

  • uh…. how do i do this stuff? :/ i really want to know, i gotta make this..

    • you need a video editor eg. sony vegas, premier pro, movie maker etc.
to put the clips together and of course you need your imagination to make it awesome.
movie maker is free but very poor.
You can get a trial for sony vegas and premier of their websites if you wanted.

      • Or if you’re on a Mac, try and get a hold of Final Cut by all means, highly reccomended

  • Edgar Cameron

After long hours of work, here is my entry to the contest. Feedback from anyone would be much appreciated, and good luck to all contestants.

    • I have to say, great choice of footage, very well lip synced on the whole great effort.
      Well done 😀

      • Edgar Cameron

        Thanks

      • Christian Fanning

we know ur excited Chaos lol.. but no need to post on EVERYTHING in here k!

        • eheh, sorry bout tht ^_^’ am just a little excited (very excited)

  • Omg Can’t believe I only just found out about this been waiting for a video editing competion for scott pilgrim 😀
GONNA GIVE THIS MY ALL!!! ;D

oh wait, confused so um… we can only use this song, cut it, reshape it, whatever we want to it and we use footage form the movie right?

    • Use anything you like. Doesn’t have to be purely Scott Pilgrim.

      • alright thanks 😀
gonna spend the rest of the next 2 weeks trying to make this look awesome 😀

  • Moviemaniacjoe

Been slaving over this. Went all out scott pilgrim!

  • My entry?
    I’ll just leave this here.

  • Here is another Scott Pilgrim creation guaranteed not to be your father’s Scott Pilgrim video

    • definetly an intresting take on the song, I’m very impressed with the originality here.
Kudos to being a being some what unorthodox (in an awesome way)

      • Thanks, had to look at this from a different POV and saw many of the entries covered the came thing. Since the rules were there were no rules, I took the lyrics to the core of its human instincts and stabbed it in the eye. Thanks for the feedback.

    • sorry but this seems hardly relevant? Did you accidentally upload this?

  • Here’s my submission…with much thanks to Edgar Wright, the director who made this contest and this readily editable footage possible!

    • i’m liking this one, well done man 😀

Also liked how you visualised scott’s little hissy fit when ramona asked about kim XD

      • johnsonnetwrk

Okay this maybe redundant, but I have a made widescreen version. Edgar you don’t really need to look at this, it’s the same thing as before, but it just looked weird with all the black screen being unused. So… Yeah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgiVWzj29ZA

  • completed this a litter earlier than I had expected. Congratulations on one more year filled with Scott Pilgrim awesomeness!

  • “You can use visuals from the movie”

Coming from the director of said I think that should be OK. I’m hoping so anyway.

  • Guest

Does anyone know how I can download this on a Mac? No right click.

  • No offense, but this is horribly out-of-tune, especially when Eye of the Tiger overlaps with Black Sheep. Whatever, I’ll still make a video for it.

  • I’m new to editing…. so i don’t have a clue were to start haha – can’t wait to hear some of the new remixes! Godd luck everyone taking part!

  • I love the end from the song! You gotta fight for this love 😀

My favorite part is when it sounds like he’s saying “Manatee” over and over again.
