People of UK and Ireland: Go. See. Attack The Block.

EXT. STARSCAPE – NIGHT

The NIGHT SKY, speckled with STARS. But look closely and -- one of the stars is SHOOTING.

EXT. SOUTH LONDON SKYLINE – EVENING

Miles beneath, the South London SKYLINE. TOWER BLOCKS line the horizon like broken teeth.

FIREWORKS crackle and bloom in the distance. Must be early November. Bonfire Night.

Lower still, a teeming scrum of COMMUTERS and VEHICLES around an UNDERGROUND STATION.

Above is a excerpt of the first page of Joe Cornish’s screenplay for ‘ATTACK THE BLOCK’; a film that he’s been thinking about making for ten years, which gets released in the UK & Ireland today.

I’ve been a friend of Joe’s for 12 years now and was a fan of his before that. I can’t tell you how happy I was to be a part of this movie and help in some small way to get it made.

I also can’t stress enough how proud we all are of the finished result. I hope those of you in the UK and Ireland have a blast with it this weekend. I hope one day it double bills with ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ as it really as much of a love letter to South London, as my film was to North London.

Congratulations to Joe, the amazing cast, crew and all at Big Talk who’ve worked tirelessly on this one.

Enjoy!

I’ve been a fan of Joe Cornish since I was in high school and I’m now teetering on the edge of graduation, I am more excited for this film than anything else being released this year. Can’t wait.

I too was lucky enough to be at the preview on Monday and am happy to report that it’s entirely brilliant – a really well-balanced blend of thrills & comedy, set in an authentic-feeling (yet somehow sci-fi) South London. I’m a huge fan of Adam & Joe so am delighted it’s so good, and I hope it turns out to be as big a commercial success as it deserves to be.

Our quick capsule review after seeing it at SXSW was:

“Assault on Precinct 13 meets Gremlins. Throw in the greatest practical monster effects since An American Werewolf in London and the best amalgamated editing and soundtrack since Fight Club and we’re talking an amazing feature debut from writer/director Joe Cornish.”

It truly is an outstanding genre film.

I saw Attack the Block on a preview on Monday night and loved it. It was everything I love about comedy horror, with aliens to boot! A delicious treat for genre lovers like myself. I absolutely loved the design and execution of the aliens, which were perhaps the most unique part of the movie. But also spot on with the dialogue and some great acting from the kids. The people in the audience I was in absolutely loved it if their reactions were anything to go by. Great movie.

I am extremely excited to see this film and have been since hearing about it from my friends who attended SXSW. I can’t wait for it to open in Canada!
