Everyday I get sent links to remixes and mash ups of ‘Scott Pilgrim’. It’s actually impossible to keep up in a most pleasing way.

Given that myself, Paul Machliss and Jon Amos spent a year editing that movie, it’s hugely satisfying to see these riffs and rejigs spinning on into entirety. Makes it all worthwhile.

This was posted in December, but I’ve only just been sent it and it’s brilliant. We recorded the riff to this track in 2008 (Jason Falkner played the part) and so it blows my little mind to see it made into a great track in its own right.

Bobby C, I belatedly approve.

And if you liked that, I also recommend Scott Pilgrim Vs Dubstep.

Okay. We’ve had Australia’s The Vines, Nottingham’s Swound and an extraordinary Ludacris mash up from San Francisco’s Mike Relm.

But now, all the way from Florida, here is another music video that not only riffs on ‘Scott Pilgrim’ but pretty much recreates beat for beat the sonic battle between The Katayanagi Twins and Sex Bob-Omb.

Not only that, the makers ripped the ‘Amp Versus Amp’ flyer straight from the movie and tinkered with the TIBB acronym so it now reads ‘Tallahassee International Battle Of The Bands’.

The poster still needs more exclamation marks though.

Either way, am amused and flattered by this Pilgrim riff, even if it lacks snow dragons and a sonic yeti.

Ironically, unlike The Vines and Swound, I was already aware that this video might happen as my VFX supervisor was approached to do the effects. As you can see below…

From: Frazer Churchill
Subject: my first “can you do it like scott pilgrim” request
Date: 29 December 2010 01:32:59 PST
To: Edgar Wright

Had an email from the Florida film house asking for “effects like scott pilgrim” for a music video:

Chris Brown vs T-Pain amp to amp like the Katanyagi fight!.

I’ll show you the treatment at some point, basically a bunch of screen grabs from the katanyagi fight!

Frazer

Obviously, Frazer did not do the finished video. But sweet of them to ask.

My final thought? Who was the guy that won the battle?

A young father name of @WeezyPine sent me this video of his young son moshing, rocking and freaking out to the ‘Scott Pilgrim’ opening titles.

I’m not sure he should be that close to the TV, but to be honest, I would have done exactly the same thing if I was his age.

Check out Sex Bob-Omb’s biggest fan.

I believe the term is “Blistering barnacles!”

Very excited to be a small part in a huge enterprise like this. Have only seen five finished minutes in 3D, but it was pretty damn gorgeous; a living painting to get lost in.

Here’s a ‘Scott Pilgrim’ screening at NYC’s MOMI next month that’s (very kindly) featured in a ‘Great Adaptations’ season.

Have heard rumblings of more double bills and outdoor screenings in USA, UK and Canada all this summer. Will blog all the details tout suite.

Museum of the Moving Image, New York – Great Adaptations May 21–July 3

School’s almost out, but it’s always a good time to hit the books. Here are some of the best adaptations of recent years, combining great literature with big-screen entertainment. There’s something for all ages, including Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer and A Little Princess for children five and up, and excellent versions of True Grit and Scott Pilgrim for tweens and teens.

Organized by Rachael Rakes, Assistant Curator of Film

Screening Details:

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Part of Great Adaptations

  • Saturday, June 25, 1:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, June 26, 1:00 p.m.
  • Dir. Edgar Wright . 2010, 112 mins. DCP. With Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman. In this thoroughly delightful film, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) inventively captures the spirit of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel about Scott Pilgrim, a young musician who meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers. To win her, he must fight and defeat her “seven evil exes.” Rated PG-13.

I just watched Kate Bush’s trippy video for ‘Deeper Understanding’ which was directed by the great lady herself. And edited by Paul Machliss (he of ‘Spaced’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim’ fame).

It was very nice to see my good friend Noel Fielding make an appearance in there too. I’ve worked with him a number of times over the years and the inclusion of him in a Kate Bush video pleases me no end.

    Check out the video.

Going further back, allow me to repost the video I directed with Noel in 2003 for Mint Royale. It’s still one of my favourite things I’ve ever directed. If you’ve never seen it, here’s the music video for ‘Blue Song’. Also featuring Julian Barratt, Nick Frost and Michael Smiley.

Okay, you might have seen that one before? So how about a deeper cut?

This turned up on YouTube from the first BBC TV show I ever directed; ‘Alexi Sayle’s Merry Go Round‘ from way back in 1998. The series featured many (then) up and comers such as Reece Shearsmith, Jessica Stevenson, David Walliams and Peter Serafinowicz. It’s also never been on DVD.

But this little sketch from ‘Merry Go Round’ features a very young Mister Fielding.

    So, enjoy the first Noel.

Thanks to http://www.youtube.com/user/DidymusBrushfor the last upload.

    EXT. STARSCAPE – NIGHT

The NIGHT SKY, speckled with STARS. But look closely and -- one of the stars is SHOOTING.

EXT. SOUTH LONDON SKYLINE – EVENING

Miles beneath, the South London SKYLINE. TOWER BLOCKS line the horizon like broken teeth.

FIREWORKS crackle and bloom in the distance. Must be early November. Bonfire Night.

Lower still, a teeming scrum of COMMUTERS and VEHICLES around an UNDERGROUND STATION.

Above is a excerpt of the first page of Joe Cornish’s screenplay for ‘ATTACK THE BLOCK’; a film that he’s been thinking about making for ten years, which gets released in the UK & Ireland today.

I’ve been a friend of Joe’s for 12 years now and was a fan of his before that. I can’t tell you how happy I was to be a part of this movie and help in some small way to get it made.

I also can’t stress enough how proud we all are of the finished result. I hope those of you in the UK and Ireland have a blast with it this weekend. I hope one day it double bills with ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ as it really as much of a love letter to South London, as my film was to North London.

Congratulations to Joe, the amazing cast, crew and all at Big Talk who’ve worked tirelessly on this one.

    Enjoy!

When I see mash ups like this one by Aperfecte it makes me break out in a big broad smile.

It also makes me think of the thousands of hours in post we spent on this movie and how proud I am of the work by the wizards D-NEG, my big brother Oscar Wright and my great editors Paul Machliss & Jon Amos.

When my life flashes before me like this I am very happy indeed.

    Thanks Aperfecte. I approve.

I don’t know what it is about my films translating in ‘My Little Pony’ mash ups. But only 72 hours after posting Bryony CommsSpike Pilgrim Vs The World‘, here comes ‘Trot Fuzz’.

    I approve!

A parody of the Hot Fuzz trailer: Ponyville is supposed to be the safest village in the country but something odd is going on and Sergeant Rainbow Dash along with Deputy Pinkie Pie are going to get to the bottom of it!

    Extra facts:

The name was based on an idea from the My Little Pony – Scott Pilgrim parody trailer.

I did remove some parts of the trailer audio, but it shouldn’t be noticeable.

Oh and the guy who made the MLP Scott Pilgrim trailer is also a pretty good guy. Yeah that counts for a fact.

For those who weren’t expecting something like this from me, yeah I watched the show enough to make a video with the source material. I’m sure we’ll all get over it.

This month’s EMPIRE magazine has some great shots of the 2011 Empire Awards.

Including this shot of me being strangled by Hines & Wossy. One of my most erotic fantasies fulfilled.

    I sincerely love this.

My fake trailer for ‘Grindhouse’ is still one of my favourite things I’ve made.

It amuses me no end to see this fake cover.

What other movie would feature Lee Ingleby, Myanna Buring and Katie Melua on the box art?

I fully expect the comments sections to feature requests for me to make this into a feature length version (a la ‘Machete’ and ‘Hobo With A Shotgun’), but I believe that the best version of ‘Don’t’ may have already been made and it was 85 seconds long.

So if you’re thinking a feature version might be made anytime soon…

    DON’T!

Either way, hope you enjoyed Tony Mayer’s excellent Criterion cover, especially love that the film was made in my birth year. Here’s what the designer had to say about it below.

When Fake Criterions announced Double Fakeout Fake Criterions Month, I had a hard time picking out what fake film to design the cover of. My first thought was the classic Angels With Filthy Souls, but some research* finally convinced me to tackle Edgar Wright’s Don’t.

My overwhelming love for giallo and supernatural Italian horror made Don’t my favorite Grindhouse trailer. I see little homages to Argento’s Deep Red, Bava’s Shock and Fulci’s The Beyond all throughout. There have been floating rumors that Wright would produce a full-length version of Don’t. All I can say is that if he did it would be a pitch-perfect tribute to some of the most mind-bending movies that Italy had to offer.

This double fake cover consists of screencaps from the trailer with a whole lot of textures and time.

*This “research” consisted of watching Grindhouse.
