Wheel On Wheels (1993)

So as promised, here’s my 2nd mash up that I edited on VHS at the tender age of 19.

As with ‘Gun Fetish’ it’s a movie montage set to The Beatles (I sure did love The White Album at the time), but this time detailing vehicular mayhem.

But it was edited the same way, locked in the tiny VHS suite at Bournemouth & Poole College Of Art & Design over a long weekend, subsisting only on vending machine coffee and Snicker bars (20p at the time as I recall).

The VHS tapes were mostly ones I have recorded off the TV, ones I had borrowed from the college library and what few retail titles I had. Indeed the shocking quality of the Kubrick clip is because this was back when that particular movie was banned on VHS. That is from a Dutch release. Those were the days.

Now, you’ll see a fair amount of overlap from the last montage, obviously, but also quite a few new and some fairly obscure clips. Again, I leave it up to you to tell me what. And I will send a little prize for the person who gets them all correct. And a couple of them might stump you.

I’d also say I didn’t have access to some of the key pre 1993 car films at the time, indeed some of the best car chases in cinema I’d yet to see. One I had seen, but could not source the tape at the time (with my limited supply of material and a student bank account deeply in the red) was 1968’s ‘Bullitt’.

Yes, that’s right ‘Bullitt’ is not present. Anyone commenting ‘No Bullitt? FAIL’ or complaining that the split track audio or video are not perfect, can go fuck themselves. Or send a handwritten note back to the 19 year old me in Bournemouth, Doc Brown style.

Think of this as an exercise in the early 90’s in cutting together car chases without “Bullitt”. I basically made these for myself and to figure out how to edit.

This one is also not completely safe for work and has some spoilers again.

So don’t say you weren’t warned! I ask anyone linking this clip to include the context of the piece and these caveats!

Enough of my yakking, let’s hit the road!

Again, a couple of things. Before any of you comment “Where’s —- or ——“, bear in mind that the 19 year old me had a limited supply of tapes at the time. I was young, I was broke. There was no internet.

As stated above, no list of clips, as I thought you guys could guess them all. First one to guess them all in order, including close ups, I will send a little prize.

Apologies to any rights holders, I was young and foolish, I didn’t know what I was doing. Please don’t arrest me, I will take it down and step away from the keyboard if necessary.

And that’s it. There is no more.

P.S. To restate, I’m going to enable embedding of the video - but if you do re-blog it, would you mind quoting my blog text too, context is very much king! - Thanks Edgar

Here’s a mashiup of humand and animal birth videos I created as a standard music video for a band from Memphis, Tennessee called Fire Catapults!

Id love to know what you thought

  • Hi! This is going to be a long post. Sorry. I’ve got my own sort-of-mashup, but more on this later. I’ve been looking for a way to tell The Creator how I love his works for a while and I guess finding this blog was my dream come true.

Ok then Mr Wright, listen up! In my humble opinion you are one of the most awesome filmmakers out there.

From the beginning: Spaced is utterly brilliant - I keep watching it again and again. Shame you made only two series of it, but I guess It only worked for the good of the show. Things like Fawlty Towers or Office also ended before they ran out of steam (not that I think Spaced ever would!), and after the few episodes that were made one can’t help but want to revisit the characters they became attached to, so I reckon the briefness adds a lot to the re-watchable value.

Then came The Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz - two of the most hilarious comedies ever made. I am sorry for putting them together but they share the same features which made me fall in love with them. They are extremely funny and they show an enormous amount of passion for films - watching them for the nth time and spotting yet another movie reference you missed so far can really make your day (I’m sad, aren’t I?). But there also is also another thing that makes both films special. It’s their Englishness. As you probably guessed by now (by those awkward grammar constructions), I am not a native English speaker, but at the moment I live in the UK. When I first saw Shaun I was still back in Poland. I loved straight away, but only when I saw it again after I spent some time in England it gained a whole new dimension. The amazing thing about Shaun and Fuzz is that they are both universal and local.

And now there is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Well, this one is a whole different story. I loved it straight away, after I saw it in cinema ( here’s the proof from my ex-blog: http://confessionsofafilmoholic.blogspot.com/2010/09/scott-pilgrim-vs-world.html )
but since then it was gradually growing on me, up to the point where I become kind of obsessed with it. The thing is it’s not really a film in a common sense. It’s more of a film-y thing-y, it is so fresh and original, like a completely new medium, so keen on breaking the established cinematic rules. Positively addictive, a life-changing experience (ask my girlfriend - I can hardly talk or think about anything else than Scott since I got it on DVD). I am the kind of person who likes to push things I love into other people’s faces, so that they get to know it and love it as well (hence my film blog), but I’m not able to be like that with your latest, mr Wright. This one feels like it was made especially for me, I am afraid that people with slightly differently designed brains to mine won’t get the same experience. One one hand I’d love Scott Pilgrim to be seen by twice as many people as Avatar was, on the other there is that feeling of being a member of this elite “Scott Pilgrim Worshippers Club”. It may not will have been seen by as many people as Avatar, but will be watched MORE TIMES in total, every fan seeing it some 3345433 times.

And now for my mashup, I made this music video at the tender age of 23(:>). It only uses footage from one film, a Polish one, called Day of the Wacko. It actually is an amazing movie, but I guess it is pretty hard to get it with English subtitles. If anyone succeeds please, give it a go and enjoy. The film tells a similar story to the one, the song I used does, but, believe it or not, it is a comedy. And a funny one too.

So I guess this is it, thank you for your attention!

Time warp-y. Cool to see a 19 year old movie fan from 1993 editing these big moments. I remember being impressed with To Live and Die in LA’s chase or maybe my mind is playing tricks on me.

  • The woman who gets shot in the passenger seat right after the Gold Finger ejection seat clip, and just before a quick blink and you miss shot from Total Recall (Which no one else is listing yet).

Is that scene from the film 1968’s “Targets”?

Also right after the flash and you miss it Total Recall scene there is a quick flash and you miss it shot from Raising Arizona. It’s Leonard Smalls shooting his gun at the station wagon.

Aliens is the skull crush scene, but whats the black car running over what looks like a head before it just after Bad Taste and what looks like a sewer break from Robocop?

    • I think we have an almost winner. Blue Velvet was indeed the yellow lines. One of the brake shots is from Man With Two Brains though. And after Naked Gun and French Connection it cuts back to the Blues Brothers.

The highway lines everyone is getting confused about is from Lost Highway, awesome soundtrack that has - evil dead claymation guy LEE

    • Wrong Lee. Lost Highway is from 1998 maybe. This was edited in 1993.

That was Great !! Kudos to you and the 19 year old you too 🙂

  • lynch then. Twin peaks?

  • wild at heart?

  • Almost.

  • pretty sure the highway lines are not from T2. Blood Simple perhaps?
Is there a small clip of an American Werewolf in London in there before Trafic?

    • You are correct. Not T2. I remember that the T2 VHS has some new copyright control that made it look brown and muddy.

What other director is famous for shooting yellow lines? Not the Coens.

And yes, American Werewolf is in there.

“I remember that the T2 VHS has some new copyright control that made it look brown and muddy.” - Brown and Muddy. That’s great! Oh the joys of taping on VHS. I made one of these tapes when I was about 15/16, but instead of having a theme of guns or cars, it was just random clips. I remember a lot of Casino in there.

Let me see. I don’t know if I got all of them, the quick shots were so brief that I got thrown off a bit so this may not be 100% but I tried. Every shot including cut-ins/outs within the context of the same film or scene:

Most of the clips have already been spotted, but here’s a few I can add:

Is the road clip after the Blues Brothers at the start from Terminator?
The jumping pickup = Romancing the Stone (following frames of the 4×4 unknown)
The drag race switches to American Graffiti for the Chevy crash
After the Back to the Future clip, the police car losing rear axle = American Graffiti again
Car jumping from unfinished freeway is possibly from CarQuake?
Romancing The Stone again with the Renault 4 over the waterfall.

Great to see those Duel clips again, I must track that film down again! 🙂

  • Excellent mashup, Very impressed to see some more obscure films in here. I can’t hazard a guess for a lot of them but I will be back to catch a full list later.

I’m glad I’ll never have to deal with VHS editing. Here’s an amusing clip from Cinemasscre where they recorded a stupid clip to VHS over and over to see how many times it took for it to totally screw up. http://cinemassacre.com/2010/05/26/vhs-generation-loss/

  • Another awesome video. It brought me joy to see my little mule: Pepe flying through the air.

  • Love it! No Bullitt #winning!

Brill! This is really well edited in time with the music. I’m a newbie to films only having lived around 5 years of avidly watching them (im 15) so heres a few of the ones i recognised:
    Blues Brothers
    A Clockwork Orange
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (thats probably wrong but the guy looks like Bob Hoskins!)
Couple kissing in car i dont know! 🙁
    Mad Max
    Thelma and Louise
    The Godfather
(the rest of the small clips i couldn’t get, give me 5 years of movie watching and i’ll get back to you on that one haha)
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the lost ark
    Naked Gun
    Batman
    Stand By Me
    Raising Arizona
    Planes Trains and Automobiles
(Couldnt get the little bits inbetween!)
    Sleeper
Another clip of Plains, Train and Automobiles
    Grease
    Diamonds Are Forever
Raiders Of The Lost Ark again
    Raising Arizona
    Goldfinger
    The Terminator
Raiders of the Lost Ark Again
    Back To The Future
    (Unknown again)
    Raiders again
    Duel
Audio at end - Raising Arizona i think?
Fill in the blanks people! 😀

You were even brilliant at 19. You are my absolute favorite director. Our comics club (The Sequential Art Society) is showing “Scott Pilgrim” today and I am giving my students extra credit if they go! I told them it’s a crime if they have not seen it!

By the way, I loved you in “Look Around You” which I also show to my Anthropology students.

  • Very Nice. (Can I put a shameless plug in for an interview I did with your buddies Nick and Simon yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChacjMHVx-E ?)
