If you have ever lay in bed at night and wondered to yourself what a mash up of ‘Scott Pilgrim’ and ‘My Little Pony’ would look like, then wonder no more…

I spent much more time on this than I probably should have.

I was not in the UK yesterday and so missed watching the union of Kate & Wills in my home country.

Thankfully the excellent coverage of one Robin Cooper kept me abreast of all the details of the ceremony.

Edgar Wright: The interview | Time Out Tokyo

‘If you’re into ocular porn, then you’ll have a blast with this movie’

How would you describe Scott Pilgrim to the uninitiated?
It’s roughly equidistant between Ghost World and X-Men, which for a studio film is completely bananas. But that’s what attracted me to it. A lot of recent comic book adaptations have gone two ways: either they’re striving for some kind of realism, like Iron Man or The Dark Knight, or they’re very stylised and gritty, like Sin City and 300. This was an attempt to embrace the magical realism of comic books – I wanted it to be a real pop art explosion. But there’s a reason for that; it’s not just a stylistic tic. What you’re watching is the movie playing inside Scott Pilgrim’s head. This is his exaggerated version of events.

This Mad Magazine parody of Scott Pilgrim tickles me. Like the ‘Fantasia’ reference!

From ‘Mad’ which originally aired February 7, 2011 on theCartoon Network.

This man went to herculean efforts with his ‘Scott Pilgrim’ remake.

He played every single part and I demand a one man show stage version.

Also, amazing work with the wigs.

    MrHomemadefilms1, I salute you.

(Spoilers below. He performs the whole damn film!)

    Follow me?

If haven’t seen ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ (and if you haven’t why are you on my blog), it should come as no surprise that there are big spoilers in this 60 second cover version.

Hats off to Philip Askins for the animation. Enjoy Shaun by way of O’Malley.

So as promised, here’s my 2nd mash up that I edited on VHS at the tender age of 19.

As with ‘Gun Fetish’ it’s a movie montage set to The Beatles (I sure did love The White Album at the time), but this time detailing vehicular mayhem.

But it was edited the same way, locked in the tiny VHS suite at Bournemouth & Poole College Of Art & Design over a long weekend, subsisting only on vending machine coffee and Snicker bars (20p at the time as I recall).

The VHS tapes were mostly ones I have recorded off the TV, ones I had borrowed from the college library and what few retail titles I had. Indeed the shocking quality of the Kubrick clip is because this was back when that particular movie was banned on VHS. That is from a Dutch release. Those were the days.

Now, you’ll see a fair amount of overlap from the last montage, obviously, but also quite a few new and some fairly obscure clips. Again, I leave it up to you to tell me what. And I will send a little prize for the person who gets them all correct. And a couple of them might stump you.

I’d also say I didn’t have access to some of the key pre 1993 car films at the time, indeed some of the best car chases in cinema I’d yet to see. One I had seen, but could not source the tape at the time (with my limited supply of material and a student bank account deeply in the red) was 1968′s ‘Bullitt’.

Yes, that’s right ‘Bullitt’ is not present. Anyone commenting ‘No Bullitt? FAIL’ or complaining that the split track audio or video are not perfect, can go fuck themselves. Or send a handwritten note back to the 19 year old me in Bournemouth, Doc Brown style.

Think of this as an exercise in the early 90′s in cutting together car chases without “Bullitt”. I basically made these for myself and to figure out how to edit.

This one is also not completely safe for work and has some spoilers again.

So don’t say you weren’t warned! I ask anyone linking this clip to include the context of the piece and these caveats!

Enough of my yakking, let’s hit the road!

Again, a couple of things. Before any of you comment “Where’s —– or ——”, bear in mind that the 19 year old me had a limited supply of tapes at the time. I was young, I was broke. There was no internet.

As stated above, no list of clips, as I thought you guys could guess them all. First one to guess them all in order, including close ups, I will send a little prize.

Apologies to any rights holders, I was young and foolish, I didn’t know what I was doing. Please don’t arrest me, I will take it down and step away from the keyboard if necessary.

And that’s it. There is no more.

P.S. To restate, I’m going to enable embedding of the video – but if you do re-blog it, would you mind quoting my blog text too, context is very much king! – Thanks Edgar

Recently I have been sent, have enjoyed and have reposted lots of filmic mash ups and montages. Some of them by editors as young as nineteen, such as Joel Walden who gave us this most recently.

The montages I’m sent make me a little nostalgic, because that’s exactly what I was doing at age 19. In between making amateur no budget films as a teen, I’d teach myself to edit by cutting together montages of movie clips on a theme. You might have heard me talking to Kevin Smith about it on a recent podcast.

The following clip I edited together while at Bournemouth Art College. Way before I’d ever seen an Avid suite, this was done over some long weekends locked in a VHS tape to tape editing suite. Yes, VHS!

So if you are wondering about the low quality of the sound and visuals in the following montage, there’s a simple answer. All of the clips were sourced from either films I’ve recorded off the TV, sell thru VHS tapes I had bought and also films that happened to be in the college library. I literally had piles of VHS tapes in the edit suite. So that explains some of the glitchy clips.

As for the audio edits, hey it was VHS and I was 19. This is the first time I used a ‘real’ editing suite.

So cast your minds back to the last century and see how I misspent my youth; cutting together bullet ballets to John Lennon’s melodic attack on the NRA.

I give you my 1993 mash up; ‘Gun Fetish’.

Beware: This is a little NSFW and spoiler heavy.

Now a couple of things. Before any of you comment “Where’s —– or ——”, bear in mind that the 19 year old me had a limited supply of tapes at the time. Most of these are ones I copied off the telly.

I haven’t, as is customary, included a list of the clips, as I thought you guys could guess them all. First one to guess them all in order, including close ups, I will send a little prize.

Apologies to any rights holders, I was young I didn’t know what I was doing. Please don’t arrest me.

And finally. I have another one, if you’d like to see…

PS. I’m going to enable embedding of the video – but if you do re-blog it, would you mind quoting my blog text too, context is king! – Thanks Edgar

I was sad to learn that my good pals The Bluetones would go their separate ways later this year after 18 years in service.

I was a fan since first hearing ‘Bluetonic’ in 1995 and later became friends with Mark Morriss and the rest of the band. Ironically, my initial introduction to Mark was because he was a fan of the ‘Mash & Peas’ sketches I did with Lucas & Walliams way back in 1996.

As well as being an admirer of the band, I later went on to direct two of their videos, use their music in the second series of ‘Spaced’, (where the band also did a cameo in ‘Battles’) and most recently put their much underrated single 1998 ‘Sleazy Bed Track’ on the OST for ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs The World’.

It’s worth pointing out that this song a) was a fave of Bryan Lee O’Malley too and b) had one of their weirdest music video concepts.

So while I am sad to see them go, I am heartened to see that the ‘Tones are on a long farewell tour at the end of the year and I dearly hope to attend one of these dates.

In the meantime why not enjoy three of our collaborations.

First off, here’s a very little seen advert for their 2002 compilation ‘The Singles’ which I directed at the end of the ‘After Hours’ shoot. That video which featured all teen actors had to wrap up at 6.30pm due to child welfare laws, so we knocked off this very silly commercial straight after. Enjoy.

Now please enjoy the first video I directed for them, 2000′s ‘Keep The Home Fires Burning’.

And finally, the video I did for their single ‘After Hours’. The concept for this came up when I first heard the single and remarked that it sounded like Paul Williams. And thus…

Maybe see you on one of their final dates?

And do follow the lovely Mark Morriss and the equally lovely Scott Morriss on Twitter.
