Yes, I believe it is.

Amazing. And lest we forget.

Which of course came from this.

Oh yes!

Not 24 hours after The Vines brought us ‘Gimme Love’, here’s Nottingham’s own musical tribute to all things Sex Bob-Omby.

It’s worth pointing out that one of the members of Swound is Lloyd Stas, the amazing poster designer behind these. Lloyd (drums) also co-directed with his brother Joe (vocals).

So enjoy the visuals and aural pleasures of the Swond sound and check out what they had to say about it after the vid. 1-2-3-4!

Here are the words of Swond themselves.

Taken from the forthcoming album ‘Into The Sea’. For a free download of this song go and ‘Like’ our facebook page here – http://www.facebook.com/swound

This is our homage to the genius of Brian Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim series and the amazing film adaptation by Edgar Wright.

We did all the filming, editing and effects ourselves because we enjoy doing things this way (and we are too poor to pay anyone).

The 8-bit tune at the start is a version of our hit single ‘Everybody Hates Her’, which you can view somewhere on here. We might get sued for using the Zelda tune but Nintendo can’t even comprehend the power that we have.

Thanks again to the above people for inspiring us to make this video. We hope the results do their work justice.

This morning a flurry of people sent me the link for the new The Vines video ‘Gimme Love‘. Many people pointed out that it was a homage to Sex Bob Omb and the opening credit sequence of ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs The World’. Some asked if I thought it was a homage or a rip off? Some asked If I actually directed it. (I didn’t.)

Well, what do I think? I am very flattered.

Was a big fan of The Vines first album ‘Highly Evolved’ in 2002 and indeed loved the Roman Coppola video for ‘Get Free‘ so seeing this makes me smile.

Nice to know that someone was taking notes out there!

If you want to compare and contrast, go check out the ‘Art Of The Title‘ article on our opening sequence, featuring in-depth interviews with me, my graphic wizard of a brother Oscar, VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation geniuses Shynola about how we achieved the effects in our movie.

It also features a clip of the video I did for ‘Summer‘ by Charlotte Hatherley that was one of the inspirations for the Sex Bob Omb opening sequence. So, you’ll see I’m not above ripping myself off.

And finally to show that I myself have done film homage in music video please enjoy my steadicam one take video for The Bluetones, which basically would not exist without my childhood favourite ‘Bugsy Malone’.

Quelle Homage!

Well, the Empire Awards was a great night and as you can see from the videos below, I was partly lost for words, especially at the shock of winning Best Director with such amazing, prestigious competition.

So I must again say thanks to all the Empire readers who voted for me. It means a lot to this West Country boy.

Cate Blanchett, star of stage and screen, winner of Oscars, BAFTAs and countless other cinematic and theatrical accolades finally talks about her most iconic part.

That of Janine in ‘Hot Fuzz’.

Thanks to Frosty Collider for bringing us this scintillating interview and glimpse into the craft of a living legend.

Ladies and gentleman, Miss Cate Blanchett.

This is pretty cool. Believe.

Holy smokes.

Young Joel Walden (@joelthemovieguy) has edited another incredible mashup of my work, editing together almost everything I’ve done*.

And when I say young, I mean that Joel is nineteen years old. Wow, indeed.

I am immensely flattered by this montage which brings together clips of ‘A Fistful Of Fingers’, ‘Spaced’, ‘Shaun Of The Dead’, ‘Hot Fuzz’, ‘Don’t’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.’

Not to mention clips of some of my music videos for Mint Royale, Charlotte Hatherley, Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster and The Bluetones.

It’s like watching my life flash before my eyes on YouTube.

Joel, you make me feel warm and fuzzy again. Thanks.

Here’s what Joel had to say about the video.

Well everyone, it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. The follow up to the widely popular tribute “The Films of Edgar Wright” has been unleashed. I couldn’t be more thankful for all the insanely positive feedback that was received by all the viewers of “The Films of Edgar Wright,” especially from Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright himself!

*So what’s missing?

Well I guess there are some more early TV credits that are out there but tough to find; ‘Mash & Peas’, ‘Asylum’, ‘Alexei Sayle’s Merry Go Round’, ‘Is It Bill Bailey?’, ‘Murder Most Horrid’, ‘French & Saunders’, ‘Sir Bernard’s Stately Homes’ as well as some other music videos; ‘Keep The Home Fires Burning’ for the Bluetones and ‘Summer’ for Charlotte Hatherley.

If you want to go even deeper there are two videos for Ruth that haven’t been unearthed. And I guess I have a whole bundle of amateur films that have not become available. Although ‘Dead Right’, the movie I made when I was 19 is on the Hot Fuzz DVD & BluRay.

I’m not suggesting that Joel goes for mashup number 3, he would be 40 by the time he tracks all of the above down. And he has better things to do with his time, clearly!

So here’s to an amazing teenage editor! Hats off!

Update

If anyone ever wondered what the jumbled FCP Sequence looked like for Edgar Wright – The Works, here it is!

I blogged this a month ago for people in the UK and Eire, but it bears repeating today!

Some Frequently Asked Questions

Q) Did you direct ‘Paul’?

A) No I did not. Greg Mottola directed it. He is one of the most talented, smartest and nicest guys in the business. And he did a fantastic job.

Q) Did you write ‘Paul’?

A) No I did not. Young Simon Pegg & Young Nick Frost wrote it together. And it’s a top notch effort by my good friends. Funny, smart, silly, warm and funny. Did I mention funny already?

Q) Is it part of the ‘Three Flavours Cornetto’ trilogy?

A) It does not feature a single mention of Walls Ice Cream or Cornettos, so no, it is not. It is also set in America, which to my knowledge does not sell Cornettos. Believe me, I have looked.

Q) Have you seen ‘Paul’?

A) Yes I have, three times now and it is one whole bundle of fun. I guess it was three bundles of fun on the three separate viewings.

Q) When do you recommend I see ‘Paul’?

A) I recommend everyone in the USA and Canada go see it today. This is an order.

Q) Will I get a discount if I mention that Edgar Wright told me to see it?

A) No you will not. But if you try, I want you to make note of the unimpressed or confused response and leave it in the comments section.

So in summary.

Go. See. Paul.

That’s an order!

My congratulations to my old muckers Simon Pegg & Nick Frost, as well as the fantastic Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Blythe Danner, Joe Lo Truglio, John Carroll Lynch, David Koechner, Sigourney Weaver, Jeffrey Tambor & Seth Rogen

And much love to Greg Mottola, Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan, Chris Dickens, David Arnold, Julian Slater, Mike Solinger, all the gang at De Lane Lea, the amazing team at Double Negative and course the ever wonderful Nira Park!

On Sunday night at the SXSW film festival it was a big night for Big Talk, aliens and Nick Frost.

For at 10pm, Greg Mottola’s ‘Paul’ starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost had its North American premiere at the Paramount Theatre. And played like gangbusters.

Then at midnight, I ran over to the Alamo Drafthouse for a second sold out screening of another Big Talk production, Joe Cornish’s ‘Attack The Block’, which I exec produced and which also features Nick Frost.

It premiered at the Ritz on Saturday night and raised the roof.

Check out this LA Times article on the premiere.

You will have a blast with both movies, if you haven’t already seen. Although Joe’s aliens are a lot more toothsome and nasty than the very charming Paul.

I will leave you with some lovely gifts that were given to myself, Simon and Nick on Sunday night by Jessica Valdez.

Who wouldn’t love the gift of Jaffa Cakes?

March 13th, 2011 | SXSW Gifts

It is worth pointing out that McVities Jaffa Cakes are the best and Burtons are not quite as tasty.

How much better are the McVities ones?

Well let’s just say when Jessica gave me these three boxes outside, I swapped around the tags to snag the McVities for myself.

I am a cold and ruthless motherfucker when it comes to Jaffa Cakes.
