    Edgar,

Something worth tweeting, so your followers in Chicago that aren’t aware can go tomorrow night.

    http://twitter.com/suomynona/status/25469946746

I’d be there, but I didn’t find out until tonight and flights start at $425 from Seattle. That’s a bit much, even for my favorite film of the year :)

    • http://flickr.com/suomynona Matthew

For some reason, they already removed the 9/25 info. This link might be better. http://musicboxtheatre.com/showtimes Don’t know why they did that.

  • RandomWizard

Wow, I’m really late to the party, but I’ve seen the movie only a dozen times, having done my own share of looking for things. Instead, what I got out of it, was being able to reenact almost the entire movie and continuously using quotes from the movie in my everyday conversation.

  • http://twitter.com/overbyte overbyte

we are sex bob-bomb and we’re here to watch this movie like a million times and stuff

  • derek

I only saw the movie once, but I have to ask. When Ramona corrects Scott for saying “Ex-boyfriends”, the last time right before Roxy shows up, does Scott reply “Why do you keep doing that?” or does he reply “Whatdo you keep doing that FOUR?”

    Good work.

Okay, viewings 12-14 today. It’s amazing the little things I’m still noticing. Some time ago I had noticed that Sex Bob-Omb was using “Lame Brand” amps/speakers. But, it wasn’t until tonight I noticed they upgraded their gear to “Sweet Brand” for the gig at the Chaos Theater.

After you mentioned Lucas Lee saying “hilarious” twice that clued me in to the fact that a majority of the exes have their rank literally verbalized during the fight :
    - “Watch out; it’s that one guy”
    - “…the two minutes it’s going to take to kick your ass”
    - “Don’t I get three strikes?”
    - I would swear during Roxie’s fight that some of her “PAF”s are written as “P4F”, so I’m going with that as her audible four
    - “We go on in five minutes.” (not sure about a six, so this five might be a stretch)
    - “It’s going to be in my digestive track for seven years!”

    • Rob

Just to Add to the #2 stuff not yet mentioned:
-The whole ‘you’re going to hear 2 clicks’ line
-The obvious #2 tattoo on his neck
-When Ramona and Scott are walking, they use a crosswalk with 2 White ‘X’ signs
-his ‘winny’ has 2 Ls on it for Lucas Lee, above a number 2
-In the background of part of the stunt double fight there is a black car with a 2 circled on it (that actually kinda looks like the deathproof car?)
-He points at Scott Pilgrim with 2 fingers (instead of how most people point with 1 finger)
-There’s 200 steps on the rail he’s going to grind
      -‘looks like you’re seeing double’
-Scott gets punched twice while asking for the autograph
-This one might be stretching it, but 200 mph is 321.87 kph and I think when LL blows up he’s somewhere in that neighborhood of speed but I can’t remember the actual speed

One I haven’t seen mentioned yet, maybe because it’s so brief-The club they all go to after the Todd Ingaram fight has a big #4 on the sign, just like a level in a video game would.

So cool and fun to find all of these upon multiple viewings.

Seriously, everyone in Seattle needs to see this at The Cinerama before the theater closes for the next 2 months. I already have a ticket for the final screening on Sunday.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/popcornprejudiceamovieblog/2012717709_cinerama_closes_for_two_months.html

After that, (currently) the best place to see it in Seattle is at Pacific Place (as long as it’s in one of the big theaters) or at Lincoln Square in Bellevue. The sound at Lincoln Square is far more impressive than the older system at Pacific Place.

I haven’t been to Cinebarre in Mountlake Terrace, and unfortunately it’s not showing at Gold Class or I would have seen it there. Gold Class is like seeing a movie — I imagine — at George Lucas’ house.

  • http://flickr.com/suomynona Matthew

SPOILER ALERT: (although the spoiler has been seen repeatedly in one of the trailers)

$11 to see the movie again? Or my having seen your film 11 times at the time that you made this blog entry. (Now at 16 — at this moment trying to talk a friend into going today.)

Kidding. I’m assuming you’re referring to when Cera and Kendrick are sitting on the swings and she assumes Winstead had 11 evil exes and Cera corrects her. Or is there a deleted scene shot at a 7-11? 😉

  • http://flickr.com/suomynona Matthew

Oh damn. I get it now. That’s impressive…

  • Anonymous

    My mind is BLOWN.

  • http://twitter.com/aMonkeyADay Chris Winzenburg

I’m totally with Matthew in regards to your apparent cameo; I would have sworn that was you playing..umm, Big Buck Hunter (or something similar) in the background of the first arcade scene. The fellow’s hair, the way he swung it as he held that orange plastic shotgun…I was like….oooohhhhh…

  • http://twitter.com/aMonkeyADay Chris Winzenburg

You know, I’ve gotta say this was a tricky one to catch… It wasn’t until my sixth or so viewing when I was finally able to see if they did indeed crank it to…

  • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

    What do 5 & 6 add up to…?

    • B-Fisch

Edgar, if you get a chance, check out the TV Tropes Page to see if there is anything just flat-out wrong. (had noticed the eleven, but hadn’t thought about the 5+6 part until I went to that page; I was just thinking Spinal Tap)

  • http://flickr.com/suomynona Matthew

The numbers 5 and 6? I haven’t seen them, I think by then I have stopped looking. Will look for 5 and 6 again tonight, unless something else comes up. Much like B-Fisch, I’m looking forward to the commentary tracks.

There are levels that make this movie worth seeing in theaters and seeing it in a packed theater is up there near the top. I wish now that I’d flown down to SDCC from Seattle just to see the film with that audience…

  • http://www.edgarwrighthere.com Edgar Wright

Wow. So much to discuss. Couple of things though. I am not in the film anywhere. There are hearts on Scott’s side but X’s on Ramona’s side on the bus. Have you figured out where 5 & 6 are?

You commitment to seeing this in the theatres is staggering. Thank you.

  • http://flickr.com/suomynona Matthew

    SPOILER ALERT:

Please don’t read my reply to Edgar unless you have seen the movie. Also, don’t read my reply if you’d rather find new things in the movie on your own. Through 16 viewings, I have noticed a thing or two that some people might not pick up in one or two viewings. Thank you :)

I took around 3 hours this morning writing the diary for Wednesday’s adventure, but when I went back to re-read it tonight, I fear I come across as a big kiss ass/loser/weirdo.

Also, in case you missed it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/suomynona/4931397936/in/set-72157624685175723/

I keep hoping that word of mouth will spread about your film.

A couple of things I’ve noticed over the last couple of days of screenings. When Michael Cera throws the TCAD CD against the other CD (telling Knives she doesn’t need to listen to them), it cracks the other CD case three times. #3, being the bassist for TCAD.

Too many #2s to mention besides the obvious ones. His ringtone beeps twice. He says “hilarious,” twice. Michael Cera gets half way through his 3rd “wow” — possibly because Ex #2 is about to burst. Probably seeing too much into that one. My favorite #2 sign is when the two traffic lights change to red after Scott and Ramona begin to ascend the stairs. Cracks his neck twice to the tune of Universal’s theme.

    I still haven’t called Ramona’s number.

Today I realized that you (understandably) placed one of Beck’s CDs so it would be noticed in a scene at the record store.

I keep trying to see what the magnets on the refrigerator say, but will probably have to wait for the blu-ray for that one…

Noticed this in my 6th viewing: When Scott comes crashing down from the sky (#3), you hear him hit 3 things before he hands in the garbage bags. Of course, everyone noticed the 3 on the garbage cans, but did they notice “Another Brick In The Wall” after he’d been thrown through the brick walls? I stuck around for the credits the other night to see if the other songs were listed from the Bass Battle, but they were not. I almost figured another one out tonight, but lost my train of thought when Todd started playing another bass line.

Speaking of the Bass Battle, did you notice ten time Grammy nominee Meshell Ndegeocello (a world renowned bassist) mentioned that scene?
    http://twitter.com/OfficialMeshell/status/22128535274

I am ashamed to admit that I still cry at multiple scenes. The same ones every time. Mostly due to similar life experiences, and how the movie brings back those memories, or how they are so similar. Just another great thing about your movie. Keeping it based in reality — while some pretty unrealistic things are going on.

And the early scene of Scott and Knives in the arcade… are you (Edgar) playing a shooter game? It almost looks like it, but I don’t know if you do cameos in your own films.

I imagine it was difficult shooting the first battle of the bands. Seeing it repeatedly, I realize you had to shoot for the special effects that weren’t there yet. To get crowd shots of things that weren’t happening yet — on top of everything else going on — is not only (obviously) impressive, but I imagine it was a gigantic headache. Probably made the battle against #5 and #6 a little easier…

I think my favorite fight sequence is probably a tie between #3 and #4. The humor between fight scenes during #3 still has me laughing. Realized yesterday (the first set of 5) at some point that one of Todd’s lines is straight from that Tom Cruise interview with Matt Lauer where he talked sh%t about Brooke Shields regarding depression and scientology. Gave me a laugh out loud moment where the others in the theater probably wondered what they missed. Cera’s “I can’t hit a girl. They’re soft” makes me bust out laughing every time.

Every scene where Mary looks at Michael — beginning with “You want me to hang out with you?” (I probably got that line wrong.) where the camera lingers just a second or two longer on her, are priceless — possibly my favorite moments in the film. I love every one of them. The one where she says, “I think I’ll have Sleepy Time tea,” and then the lingering look. They have great screen chemistry.

I’m sure it’s been run into the ground, but I love the hearts going by on both of their backgrounds at the end of the bus scene. I realize that they are there throughout the scene, but by the end, you see hearts on both shots. At my 16th showing tonight, I was wondering if there were hearts reflecting from the crystal ball at the #4 night club, but figured my eyes might be playing tricks on me. I didn’t see any, but wondered it after they had already passed…

When Knives “attack hugs” Scott, is this sound played as she says “Attack Hug!”?

At my second screening on Wednesday, I unknowingly went to an early afternoon screening that was closed captioned for everyone in the theater. It was nice because I had missed things like “hasbian” — I thought she was saying “has been.” I also was never able to figure out that Knives was saying “Go get her” and “Sauna” after #7. The biggest surprise was the question mark after Scott says, “like Jet Packs.” I thought that was his answer. Have thought it for about a month now — ever since seeing the “Love” remix trailer. So, is Scott answering with a question of his own, or is “Like Jet Packs” the answer to her question?

I haven’t noticed any continuation errors, although I continue seeing the “Lady dudes” (as Scott refers to them at Julie’s party) repeatedly throughout the film. They definitely know all of the cool places to go.

Brie Larson could play the next Terminator. Her answers to some of his questions are without any emotion, and she says things that are practically pornographic. I love it. I don’t know if that was how she was told to play Envy, but it’s brilliant. Both the scene on the phone, and the one in the coffee shop — Porno/Terminator! haha.

Okay, I’ve been up now for about 20 hours, and I’m sure this is coming off as rambling. I’ll try to rewrite the “diary” of Wednesdays viewings. That one is more interesting because they were at different theaters spanning from Seattle to Bellevue. Today, not so much because I saw the movie 5 times spread over 2 theaters, the best theater — and one of the best in the country to view Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World — is within walking distance of where I live.

P.S. I noticed the squirrel going across the telephone line in the film for the first time on Wednesday.

  • Rob

I saw this post and went to go see it again tonight.

  • B-Fisch

I payed twice for one matinee show (and bought tickets for two other people). I’d had to run an errand, and wasn’t able to return in time to grab my ticket, so I just bought another one. Went to the bathroom, and was seconds from my seat when the 8-bit theme started playing. Sometimes, my timing can be legendary. Not my first viewing, either; went to the premier, and I’ve never known so many people in one theater (My university’s entire Honors Lounge- not the Honors Program, the people who hang out in the lounge- was there) Matthew, you have unlocked a real life achievement for your troubles. I will probably not come close to what you have done (partially because I spent the summer paying an average of $6 each week to perform at a bar; my money reserves are low). Edgar, your movie is quite fantastic, and I look forward to the DVD commentary. (I always try to see things from the creator’s perspective)

Matthew. You have gone above and beyond the call of duty. You make me proud to be a film maker.

You should do a diary of your five viewings in one day experience. And what you got from the film each time. Love to hear it.

  • Nadine

The film is like a master class (in all areas of production). The experience gets richer, the more times it is viewed. I hope Brian Lee O’M is stoked. Ellen Wong is a delight - that girl looks good kicking butt (dare I say she has some Chan-esque poise about her?).

Someone should take 7 of their Exes to see the movie 7 times … and then destroy them when the credits roll for the coins.

Yeah but @suomynona only paid bargain prices???? Even paying full price for all that awesomeness is already a bargain in itself! SHAME ON HIM!!!

That was my hope as well :) While I’m looking forward to having this movie on blu-ray, this movie should be seen in theaters.

I paid bargain prices for the early shows today, but for the other 8 screenings? Full price. Also, I had free passes that I could have used twice, but will use them later on the new Clooney or Damon film. I’d rather give my money to this film.
